Is it legal to sell a computer with a MSDN copy of Vista? How about with the release candidate of windows 7? Sorry for my ignorance and if I'm breaking any forum rules. I need a correct answer--of which I believe I only will be able to get here. Thanks.

As far as I know, the MSDN copies cannot be resold under any condition. So no on that. But the W7 copy? That's weird...as it is an OS that does expire and you would have to tell the end user about that.

Pretty sure you can't - to make certain, read the terms and conditions and the license agreement under MSDN.
(not sure if you can leave the OS on the laptop for free though - it will be outlined in the license agreement)

    ??? - is that irony?

    It was a joke.

You're probably best off reinstalling what originally came with the computer.

Do that, or but Ubuntu on it. But I'm pretty sure it's legal to sell with Windows 7, as I've seen other members here do it.

sounds like someone grabbed a 'loose' computer from the school labs and is trying to dump it before things catch up to them.

So it's legal to sell a computer with Win7 RC? Not that I'm sure I'm going to since it will expire soon, I'm just curious.

Okay, I'll do that then, thanks.

I have a barebone laptop I put together that I haven't been using and I want to sell it.

I don't think it's legal to sell a MS product Windows 7 RC that you get for free.

+1 for Ubuntu. Not my favorite Linux, but you will be able to sell it as an Ubuntu machine, and you will be on safe legal ground. For the others, closely read the license. I am 90% certain you can't resell with either, but I have not fully read them both.

I can pretty much guarantee that it's not legal. You simply can't distribute a Microsoft OS for profit that way, even if you are claiming that it's "free" and the buyer is merely paying for the hardware. That dog won't hunt.

Either sell it with the OEM licensed OS that it originally came with, an open source OS, or no OS at all. No to Win 7. No to MSDN or Technet licensed OS's.
