Since I switched to W7 I have been using WindowsMedia to play all my DVDs and have always has an unremarkable audio component. Last night, just by chance, I took out my laptop remote (had the laptop a year now and never used it) and started playing around with the controls. I pushed the button for Windows Media Center and remembered I can play DVDs from there. Just see how it worked, I used it to play my movie and to my surprise it did a phenomenally better job of separating the audio than did Windows media. In fact, watching the movie (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) was like watching it for the very first time. I'm not sure why this is, but the results were dramatically different.
Even though I don't have surround sound hooked up, I still got a lot of new audio nuances I didn't know were there using just stereo. The dialogue also came through a lot clearer. Wow! What a find. WMP is a much better way to play DVDs.
Serendipity!
