Started yesterday. XP Pro. During boot, system/task tray and desktop icons begin to blink on and off (5 secs on--1 sec off) This continues for 30 minutes and then stops (sometimes). Also during blink, the focus on my typing is changed and I have to use my cursor to get it back ...heck of a problem typing this...

I have run virus and spyware such as Norton, Uniblue Spy Eraser, WebRoot Spy sweeper numerous times. Scanned, cleaned and optimized registry... Nothing works... Need some helpful suggestion. On verge of complete wipe and reformat... geez I hate thinking of reloading all this software....

    Start>Run>type msconfig

This will show which programs are starting up with Windows XP.

Is system restore turned on? Maybe you can just go back to 2 or 3 days ago instead of reinstalling everything.

Go get Mike Lin's Startup.cpl program, it does a better job of locating startup programs than msconfig. It's simple to use and understand.

The first dl installs as an applet in the control panel. The second is a stand alone exe.

Either way, run it and post the results of each tab.
