As I recall, there was a thread about a program that would remove any uneeded processes to increase performance. I'm trying to speed up an old computer we have (it's not ancient, but it's very slow) and I thought it'd help to stop all of that stuff from running.

I was looking through the software section trying to find the program but it seems as though the thread was deleted. I couldn't find anything else about programs that remove uneeded services, so I figured that there is no harm in just asking again.

If I recall correctly, there was a program that was supposed to cut back on the number of processes or services that start up with the computer to save resources. Does anyone know of something that does this? I was going to try to stop any services, but I wasn't exactly sure what I'd need. If there is a program that gets rid of uneeded services as well, that'd be great.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure what program you're talking about, but I know one thing you should try is hijackthis. Run it, then you can either google the results to find out what you can get rid of or post a log here and they will let you know what you can delete.

A comprehensive list of things you can do to optimize windows xp can be found here:

I think there's a thread somewhere on this forum that links there as well.

Here's a link you can check out all the services that XP has and see if it's a critical service or not. The site gives a good explanation of each service.

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

You can then do a manual modification of the active services to stop them from loading at bootup, but I must warn you, this is not for an amature. You should know what you're doing because one wrong step and you could stop your system from booting.

To manually change the services at bootup, just right click My Computer and select Manage. Under the Services & Application -> Services Field in the list, this will contain all the services that are loaded on the system (some active, some not). Just disable the ones that you don't want/need (that haven't been started) and you should be set. The ones that are Manual and have not been started can be left alone (requires you to manuall start for the service to work).
