ok....here's what i want to do:

I have an old Pentium II 233mhz computer with a 13GB hard drive and 64mb of RAM. It runs on Windows 98. I want to reformat the harddrive and set the pc up to be an FTP server.

First of all, can I do it?

How do I reformat the harddrive and reinstall windows 98 (I have a disk that says "Windows 98 for pcs without windows", a "Windows 98 starts here" disk, and a "Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition boot disk" floppy disk)? Would Linux be better (meaning easier)?

After I reformat...do I have to find drivers and all of that stuff? because I have no idea where I could find those archaic drivers...

I plan on using filezilla server and client software, will it work and be compatible?

    EDIT:
Looks like the start here disk is just a tutorial for things like "running scndsk" and "adding and removing programs"

    And its a pentium II 266 mhz....my bad... 8)

I wouldn't use 98 for any type of file server. It's just not designed for it. However, that's entirely up to you. I would use Linux.

Yes, you'll have to find drivers for your hardware. Try the manufacturer websites and Google.

You'd be better off buying a P3 or P4 used system out of the classifieds for $150 and installing XP on it. Then you won't have to deal with finding drivers.

yea yea...thats great...I'm not spending any money. I'm only going to work with what I have. Thx though.

I still need to reformat it...thats the first step. Ideas? Guides?

Kegobeer: What variety of linux? Will filezilla still work on it? And, if I don't know what hardware is in it anymore, how can I find that out? Will everest work on 98?

Drivers should be easy. Most likely, it'll run out of the box with the standard Windows drivers.
However, I'd second the suggestion to use Linux instead. Win98 is bad enough for normal use. For servers, I'd avoid it like the plague.

And any FTP server should work and be compatible with your client. It's not much of a FTP server if it doesn't follow the FTP protocol. And as long as it follows that protocol, your FTP client can use it.

What kind of linux should I use? And I still need to reformat all of the partitions and combine them into one, big drive. I'd prefer to get a clean install of win 98 before I do anything with unfamilar OS's. That way I have something to fall back on, even if it is a POS micro$oft program

Ok, I successfully reinstalled windows 98 then went to the file zilla download site and realized win98 and linux aren't supported. Does ubuntu server distro have FTP software in it? What other free FTP clients are there?

If you want it to be a server, you need server software not a client. I think Ubuntu uses a version of apt-get, so you'd want to use that to install Apache Server. It's free and open source and very useful. Ubuntu is a great distro if you're new to linux, very user friendly.

Apache is an http server so that wouldn't be what you want. PureFTPd and ProFTPD are both recommended linux ftp servers. However, these are command line servers and you'll need to download an external gui, e.g. Pureadmin, or the excellant webmin if you'd prefer to have a web interface (this makes installing an http and mail client simple too)
