since I started visit NBR, i find different "cute" software that seem promising and try them up. Which end up causing a bloated registry and ultimately widowsn re install.

Now, I just did a re install and lack of trial and error leave me itching.

    post fun/useful/un-common software you use.

    good examples:
Monitory off - turn your monitor off just like think pad fn f3
junction magic - scan all junction point and create junction point

    bad examples:
    temp monitoring
    office
    chrome/firefox
    winrar/7-zip

    Some good ones:

    Monitor Off is great.

Network activity in the tray to get the blinking icon from the 'good' old days (great to spot any unwanted activity).

Agent Ransack, finds all the stuff that w7 search should have found.

I always read people use a 3rd party program for copying stuff within windows, does that help copying/moving or just a better GUI?

These tools were more relevant before Windows 7; W7's file transfers have become far more reliable and efficient. That said, it's still not perfect, especially with massive quantities of small files.

The best third-party tool I've tried is FastCopy (link in signature); consistently got better speeds with small file workloads than W7's file transfers or TeraCopy.

One of my must-haves is WhoCrashed. It basically deciphers the retarded BSOD text into plain English - what caused the crash and perhaps what may be done to resolve it (if it happens frequently). It's miles better than the "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown/crash" dialogue that pops up after a system crash. (Also saves you the hassle of checking the Windows Event Viewer logs).

This is especially helpful when you've recently installed a plethora of software or drivers; troubleshooting unstable drivers is a lot easier with this little program.

Product site is here, and it's completely free.

CCleaner- deletes all your cookies and generally seems to keep your system laggy free
HWmonitor- monitors the temperatures of your CPU/gpu/hdd/mobo etc
DriverGenius- downloads and installs driver updates
Xpadder- maps your keyboard to a Xbox or ps3 controller (can't live without this one)

Scan to PDF. Scanning documents to images is weak. Found this little neat program. Doesn't even require an installation.

    A few useful ones:

ShellExView, ShellMenuView, FileMenu Tools: All you need to customize the context (Right click) menu of different items. Works with x64 and x86.
FileMenu Tools also comes with a lot of useful features, such as Checksum calculation and batch renamer.

Duplicate Cleaner: A very useful tool to find duplicate files, has many search options for different file types.

Q-Dir: File manager, lots of customization options. Up to 4 panes in a single window!

TextCrawler: Batch text editor, for editing multiple text files at once (search and replace operations mostly).

    SuperCopier!

Ability to pause the transfer, or if in the case the media that you're copying to gets removed/disconnected, the ability to retry from where was left off, very useful imo.

F.lux: cycles through regular and dark orange screen brightness through the day so your eyes don't hurt and you're not awake all night.
Mr. Hyde: ctrl+h hides windows from the task bar and the task manager

f.lux seem interseting, but does it kill my calibration?

edit: getting used to it. 5000k at night is pretty nice,

WinStatDir very handy when running on SSD and you need to find out what's taking up so much space.

    Great thread!

I think I can contribute with two great apps:

QTTabBar enables you to view multiple folders in one windows explorer window tabbed

DeskPins Freeware download and reviews from SnapFiles pins a window, so that it always stays topmost

BTW. I'm using a custom color profile and f.lux disables it - is there any way around it?

I've had some trouble getting it to work, but once it was configured properly it works like a charm. Very customizable, midlleclick opens in new tab etc. Once you get used to the features it provides you won't want to go back to std windows explorer - it makes working with windows folders much easier but I guess you won't know until you try
