Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. My son's standard user account got some of those fake security scan windows popping up. I closed those windows (is that bad?), restarted the machine, logged into my administrative account, updated MS Security Essentials and MBAM definitions, scanned the PC with MBAM, and cleaned the fakeMS Trojans using MBAM. After that the shortcuts in the Start Menu and QuickLaunch in my son's account no longer works. Instead of launching the corresponding program, a shortcut would bring up a file open dialog, asking which program we want to open the file with. Please help. Thanks!

Saw this fix on another forum. Try it:
Right click on the desktop and select the view menu. From here, navigate to "Show desktop icons". If we are in luck, this is unchecked. Check it. Desktop icons appear. Fixed. Hope this helps and let us know, -
Thanks! I will give it a try.
By the way how do I bring up the property page for a shortcut in Win 7? When I right click all I get is "unpin this program" and no "properties" menu option unlike XP. -
if this is the same one i had to clean up for a work colleague then you could be in for some fun.
login into the admin log in could have opened the door for it but lets hope not.
i would shut down and reboot into safemode by hitting F8 continuously.
run a full virus scan on both accounts in safemode and then report back. this little bugger could take a while to get rid of. -
Can I update definition via wireless internet in Safe Mode?
Shortcut/QuickLaunch turned into file open dialog after cleaning fakeMS Trojan with MBAM?
