Assume you use the same login value dozens of times in a given day. Instead of typing out e.g. Beta88_$$31*teSt99! or some similar value, is there any way to configure Windows so that that value will populate a field (in Explorer or Firefox etc.)when you hit a key or combination of keys?

E.g. in Word, I know one can hit a combination of keys to display a given value like the Euro sign or British pound sign. I think they call it a Shortcut key. So I thought Windows may allow custom values to be programmed in so that could be used in Internet Explorer or Mozilla.

So my question is... can I configure a keyboard key or keys to display a given value?

    Thanks in advance!

Typing euro symbols etc... is done by entering the key code value into the system, which inserts the symbol. This is very different than "auto typing for me", and would not be called a "Shortcut key". A shortcut key is something like "ctrl-c" to copy, "ctrl-s" to save, "alt-f" for file menu, etc...

What you need is a program that lets you create new "hotkeys", which are keys that can be used anywhere in the system, and initiate an action. "Windows-E" is an example of a hotkey that will start explorer. One program that lets you type using a hotkey would be: "autohotkey" http://www.autohotkey.com/

As a warning, putting your passwords into a program like this is very insecure!

IE already saves form information provided the underlying labels in the code match up to what is stored, so in most cases you can just type the first letter or double-click the field to get the value.

Google toolbar (and maybe others) also have ways to fill in forms with pre-defined values that you could use as well.

Agree this works in many instances, but in many it doesn't.. e.g. yahoo email. You must type it out, I have autofill on and I have never been able to autofill there. For the yahoo example, with me and my wife signing in and out (different yahoo ids) dozens of times a day, it gets annoying.

    Thanks!

Sounds cool. I will check this out. Agree about not using passwords in such a program. I just want something to use for login IDs.

    Thanks!

You could try using 2 different browsers, 1 for your wife and 1 for you, then you each wouldn't have to sign out, depending on if you want to leave it signed in or not. One could use IE, and one could use Firefox to avoid cookie issues. If you both like firefox, one could use the installed version, ans the other could use the portable version (portableapps.com). Then you can have them both open and no conflict. Opera would be another option.

    Or you can try Opera.

You and you wife can both save your passwords, and just press CTRL + Enter to enter the username and password. If you have only one username and password saved for a website, it will log you in automatically, and if you have more than one, it will list all the user names (won't display your password, ever) associated with the website.

For example, I have two GMail accounts, and when I open GMail, and press CTRL + Enter, this menu pops up. I just select the username, and press enter.

This feature is called Wand. It will work with EVERY website. You can add as many passwords as you like for one website, and can add as many websites as you want.

Not to mention it is the fastest and the most secure browser in the world.
