Hi,
my Windows Update isnt showing availability of SP1 final ..
maybe coz i have RC1... i am uninstalling as we speak.
So should i Risk a manual install from the site?
I heard there are some risks if i do a manual install instead of Windows Update based.

I manual installed on my desktop and accidentally put it on my M1210 with Windows update (before they pulled it off auto), and both worked fine for me, I don't see how it is any different, other then you have to download more for the distributable.
-
there were some pre-sp1 updates needed to ensure sp1 install goes smoothly--if you have those, than a manual install will be fine
Even if you do not have those, it will probably go fine. -
u guys mean Auto update is no more available?
-
its not much of a risk.
if your notebook really isnt compatible with SP, the standalone installer will give you an error -
nah its not that its no more MS just halt it for a while until they fix a bug they found that affect the update process and advice consumers not to install SP1 until it is rectified.. it also affect the distribution of XP SP3.

I updated a machine to SP1 last night thru Windows Update. I think the problem is that you still had the RC installed. Once thats removed, you should be able to see SP1 in WU
-
Not necessarily. I don't have RC installed and I still don't see SP1 in WU. I'm likewise considering a manual install because my USB drivers are screwed up. Does anyone know Microsoft's schedule for releasing SP1 to everyone via WU?
-
No idea, they are still fixing the bug.
u go ahead like me n do a manual install. -
Have you checked your machine to see if there are any compatibility issues with SP1, as far as drivers are concerned? I believe WU will not show SP1 if you have certain drivers which are incompatible. There was a link somewhere, I'd have to find it
-
I don't think is much of a risk, it worked for me.
-
ya thats what i felt..
unless all driver issues have been fixed... SP1 wont install via WU.
but but but..
i installed SP1 manually last nite on my dads Sony vaio..
no problems so far. -
I haven't discovered all the goodies yet with SP1 but I can tell you that it will display the total RAM installed, 4GB in my case.
-
No, I have not checked because I'm not sure which drivers are the problem. If you find the link, please let me know.
-
SP1 should be for all XP machines.
-
Vista Machines you mean?
-
Yes,
I have two machines one XP and another one Vista, so I'm dealing with SP3 and SP1, sorry!
-
you will be fine. i have installed it manually from disc on nearly 40+ machines with not a single error..
-
40+ machines, man you must know the installation process by heart by now
-
See if something on your machine is on this list:

prob even more than that
-
There is no risk in a manual SP1 installation.
For those who have been regularly updating the OS via Windows Update, it makes sense to wait for the SP1 to be delivered via this channel as the total download size is around 70MB as opposed to the 434MB standalone SP1 installer. -
Thanks! It turns out the fingerprint reader's driver was out of date. Once I updated it, SP1 showed up just fine on WU and I installed it.

There can be a risk if you have one of the drivers that is known to have issues with SP1. For anyone doing a manual (aka FORCED) install of SP1, you should really image your C: partition before you start. There are a handful of reports of folks who did a forced install over some of the known bad drivers and would up with a n unusable machine. Not a lot of these reports, mind you, but enough that the 30-45 minutes it takes to image the partition will be worth the effort.
