    Here's my dilemma:

I have windows 7 beta on my LG P300 laptop as my main OS. I've been using it for 2 months and haven't found any hiccups with it. The only problem I have with it is that it'll expire in august...

Lately I've been thinking about switching back to vista. The thing I'm annoyed about vista is how its a memory hog. But other than that I have no problems with it. Plus all my drivers work on it.

So I'm looking for some opinions on which OS to use.

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Personally, I would stick with Vista and wait until Windows 7 goes mainstream or at least when the proper and/or better drivers are available.
If you use Vista, make sure to check out our Vista tips and tweaks guide to help optimize your system.

If you have no problems with Windows 7, you've still got 5 months+ until it expires. Why go through the trouble of reinstalling if you have no reason to other than that you'll have to eventually?

I'd start considering switching back in early July if you still have no other reason, if only to give yourself some breathing room if you procrastinate on it. But right now - it expiring in August is no reason to switch back!

    Thanks for the welcome.

I'm thinking of the expiration date cause I don't have an external hard drive so I dont want to accumulate stuff than when its august lose all of it.

I dont have a lot of stuff on my computer right now.

Please show me a screenshot of Vista's task manager and Windows 7's task manager running the same apps. I am curious as to the "hog" Vista is compared to Windows 7, and I would like you to show me.

Vista isn't the memory hog everyone seems to think.

It uses a utility called "superfetch", that caches your most used program files for quick access. This causes the appearance that it's hogging your RAM, but it truth, as soon as that space is needed by a program that you're running, it's freed practically instantly (we're talking microseconds here).

^^You may want to flick through this.

If you only have one drive, try making two partitions: one for the OS and programs, one for data. That way you can reinstall the OS without losing your user files.

I was just going to say this. Vista see's empty RAM as wasted space, so will utilise it as a program cache, resulting in quicker loads times for your frequently used programs.

Whats the point in having 3GB RAM if you want to use as little as possible? :|

As concurring with many posters above,

. Vista is not a memory hog as it makes out to be, or as many perceive.

. Unused RAM = "dead" RAM

    cheers ...

Just wait in August when Win7 comes out to see if you can just reload the program over the Beta version so you don't have to do extensive work.

How did Microsoft handle the Vista roll out with the beta testers? Did they get an extension? Vista has not been out that long, but darn if I can remember what happened when the beta versions expired as I did not have a notebook at the time that could handle Vista as I was waiting for Vista before I bought one. From what I have read about the Windows 7 version, it sounds like a keeper and the original poster should try to keep it going. Not matter what OS you have, you should have an external drive or another PC on your home network to back up you files no matter what the circumstances are as you never know if a hard drive is going to spin up everytime you push that power on button.
