I'm buying a new computer soon and wondering what I should do. I was thinking wait, but then the trial only lasts for 60 days. They say Office 16 comes in mid-2015 so idk what to do. Is it worth the wait?

    A few questions .. :

How often you ever use the new features of office?

Are you a student or have access to a large corporate email?
You might be eligible for Microsoft discount for Office Professional Plus for $10 or a discounted Office 365 account

    ---

    Also,
You can just subscribe to office 365 and not worry about the version as the offline version does grant the upgrade path.

    -----

In my humble opinion, it doesn't really matter which version to get unless there is a specific feature that you want

Once Office 16 comes out you will not be able to buy Office 2013 from Microsoft...and any left over Office 2013 will be snatched up leaving you with just Office 16.

Yes I am a student and have access to office 365. Kinda annoying though to use the program online and it feels different from normal Office. All I really need is basically word,PowerPoint, excel

What do you want from us? You're going to have to make up your mind yourself, I'm afraid. Nobody else can tell you if the wait is worth it for you. For what it's worth, and as far as I can tell, in your case it wouldn't matter one wit what version of Office you get.

A Student...gets Office at a big discount...from College...you just have to provide them proof your a college student and that should be sufficient to get the Student Office 2013 version far less then paying Retail. Did you even try this way...That why I tell people unless your in a place where you have Wired or wifi internet 24/7 get the Office package and avoid Office 365 unless that is in your work place then you have constant internet connections. This is the handicapped with Office 365 gotcha...want to use it you need internet working 24/7 to use it. Users talk about how great having cloud Office 365 but forget when you have no Cloud Office 365 is pretty much worthless. At college they should have Office 2013 for Student discount as well to buy otherwise you can buy from MS showing your Student information to buy at Student discount rate.

That is partly untrue. It does phone home from time to time, every month and does require you to be connected to the Internet when it's time to check the subscriptions status, but you do not need to be connected all the time to the Internet to use Office 365. It's still not something that is fun to deal with, but it isn't as restricting as you make it sound. Also, if his university offers stand alone versions of 2013, then that is nice, but on Microsoft's store, the best deal to be had in terms of price/what you get is that 80$ four years Office 365 sub.

@OP, Pirx is right in that Office 2013 or 2016 won't change a thing. As things may stand, it's entirely possible that his university is still on Office 2010 even as I'm writing this.

It's also important not to confuse the Office web apps with Office 365, Office 365 is the subscription model for the desktop Office suite.

Office 365 is basically identical to the current version of Office, but includes some online services as well.

But as anything I want my control and freedom from having to be online every-time to fire-up Office and get using and doing what and where I want to use it. I like full package on my computer then always having to connected to have the privileges of using Office 365...that is pretty worthless to me. I work for a non profit that uses Office and I bought full Office 2010 Pro and 2013 Pro for pennies on the dollar and that is with Office 2010, 2013 on DVD media far less then what you would pay at the Retail price.

I'm not saying that once a month is a non issue, all I was saying is that there is a difference between always online and once a month. It's actually once every 30 days and there is a "grace period" that will tell you to connect to the internet to be more precise. The idea was to point out that once every 30 days isn't as bad as needing a constant internet connection.

I do get where your coming from. But I rather pay once and have the privilege of using and not have to shell out money just to have the subscription constantly nagging me "pay me to use me". If they are student they can get a full feature Office 2013 Student edition probably close to what you would spend doing the subscription way. But the downside of internet is not everyone can afford it or is it internet access everywhere that is where the problem can happen and always seem to happen at those times.
