    I have a Asus N56VZ with Windows 8 install. Would I benefit installing 8.1?
I am a gamer, I play BF4 and Minecraft on my rig. Would there be a benefit to upgrading to this? Or is it just going to hog my CPU and ram and be crap?

    - You would benefit installing 8.1.
    - There would be a benefit to upgrading to this.
    - No.

8.1 contains a lot of user interface improvements over 8.0 (see the second link in my sig for just one example). However, some users are reporting mouse lag with 8.1. I am not, and plenty of people are not having any mouse problems with 8.1, but some are. If I were you, I'd try upgrading to 8.1, but have everything backed up, so in case you get mouse lag with your particular setup, you can revert to 8.0.

Oh nothing. I just thought it was kind of funny that he was repeating your syntax mistake, whether intentionally to be cheeky or not. "You would benefit installing 8.1" instead of "you would benefit from installing 8.1" makes it sound like you are benefitting 8.1 hehe.

no, it doesn't. W8.1 isn't the subject of the sentence. i thought you were referring to the mouse lag malarkey too.

my vote is for 8.1 also, OP.

I found that 8.1 messes every thing around, the start button is poor, i prefer the iobit start button for Win8 many more option, also 8.1 requires new drivers and a lot of the setting have been moved, i will be sticking with Win 8.0 for the moment.

Is there a way to turn off the start button in 8.1 so i can you an my favorite replacement.

    John.

IIRC that question was answered in another thread and the answer is no but if you install a 3rd party app like StartIsBack it will overwrite the default start button.

I personally prefer 8.0 as I can deal with its quirks and UI. It's almost as if MS presented 8.1 as if people are too stupid to notice that 8.0 and 8.1 are basically the same. :p

Running Windows 8.1 atm. The small tweaks make it better than W8. Boot to desktop, disable charms, Apps View as Start screen, unified search.

Which I've had, and more, from the very beginning of Windows 8 with StartIsBack.

Well now people who want those things don't have to go to a third-party solution to get them. Using third-party software for those things was a matter of contention for some people. If you're happy with using third-party software, you'll always get more customization options by doing so than by just relying on stock software.

You skip right over the "AND MORE" part. So for that they have to go to a third party app still. Lest we forget that even with the and more part we still do no get it all!!!!!!!!!

With every OS, there's always some "and more" feature that third parties offer that isn't part of the stock software. It's true of Android, WinXP, Win7, Win8.0, and Win8.1. So I'm not horrified that there's some additional functionality that you can add to the OS through third-party software. That's always true.

The main thing is, for people who want the four features that Jobined described, you can get them as part of stock Windows with 8.1. I don't know which particular features octiceps is referring to when he says "and more," so I can't say whether or not it's now part of stock Windows with 8.1. But the four that were specified? They're part of 8.1.

You mean besides having an actual Start Menu? (Please don't get me started again on how the Start Button and Start Screen "replace" the Start Menu, that's malarkey.) Well, there are too many to list, what with the variety of third-party replacements out there which provide unique features and functionality. A couple of the ones I can think of off the top of my head that are genuinely useful to some people are Windows XP-style Start Menu and taskbar on the Start Screen. True, these are above-and-beyond what even Windows 7 has, but at the very least the indispensable features which were lost between Windows 7 and Windows 8 are restored.

User choice is a good thing even if Microsoft has stopped believing this to some degree with a number of choices they made in Windows 8 and 8.1.

And as for those four "new" features in Windows 8.1, it's really three since boot to desktop already existed in Windows 8 with the simple Task Scheduler tweak. I think if someone was already bothered enough by the lack of the other three features, he/she would've installed StartIsBack or similar long ago instead of waiting a year for Microsoft's half-hearted attempt to make amends.

BattleField 4 was tested and found to run 3-6% faster under 8.1 than in Windows 7.

Windows 8 is less resource intensive because it does not rely on Aero, but if you run a bunch of metro apps in the backgroud then you will lose performance.

Aero had its benefits, but at least we could choose to easily turn it off if we wanted to. User choice died with Windows 8.

I'll be installing Windows 7 on my 24GB M.2 Once i get home, challenge accepted

Gonna disable swap, system restore and hibernate, and gonna remove IE and Media Player/Center to replace them with FF/VLC.

    Will see how that goes.

Will be comparing it to 8.1

To the original poster, 8.1 is worth it but make sure your system has the updated drivers for it. If it messes up, its not so easy to roll back. You basically have to do a recovery. Its a multi gig update if I remember right. I also noticed that some modern apps require it like the facebook app. Its does improve it, but only if your system/drivers can tolerate it.
