The reason: I am buying a new laptop soon, most likely DELL E1705 with a T7200 2.0Ghz Duo 2 Core (64bit) processor.. so I was wondering, is Ultimate the only version that make sense to run with this cpu? I usually work a lot with office, photoshop, 3dmax and play games from time to time

You might have no choice in the matter, unless it's a XPS notebook. Being that most new PC's are Vista loaded. If it come with Ultimate then great, but don't spend more money if it already comes with an edition that runs aero.

The Vista Home Premium should be all you need. Check out your options. If Ultimate is $80 or $90 over the Premium edition, it wouldn't be worth it to me.

Why would you think that? You can run any version of Vista on a T7200 and it will run the same. All versions of Vista are available in 32bit as well as 64bit forms. If you buy from Dell, it will most likely be 32bit version. The only differences being that Ultimate gets all the features and a few extra goodies in terms of Ultimate extras(Dreamscape). If you dont need/have any use for the extra features or if one of the Premium/Business versions meets your needs then you could get the lower versions of Vista rather than spending for the Ultimate.
