I am a bit confused about whether to install Vista Service Pack 1 or not.
On the one hand, it sounds very tempting, as it supposedly fixes some bugs that
have been annoying me quite a bit (especially the failing to resume from standby one).
On the other hand, though, I have heard some negative opinions and warnings about installing it. What is your opinion?

The negative opinions are the minority. Most people benefit from SP1, and chances are you will too. If it appears in your Windows Update, then install it.

are you installing it from windows update or the stand alone installer?

It fixed some bugs and worked out very well for me.

    I would.

Though if you ever do, I would recommend that you do a complete reformat and then install SP1 first before installing any of your drivers. There seems to be a driver issue once you install SP1 on certain systems.

You can also integrate SP1 now with a program called vLite (vlite.net).

Download a standalone install from m$ don't use the windows update one.
Try to minimize what is running when starting the install.

NO, dont download the standalone. You should always download it from Windows update. Windows update scans if your system has one of the problematic drivers. If it does then it wont show up on your WU meaning SP1 isnt ready to be installed in your system yet.

O.K, so it sounds like I'll probably be off best by installing with a standalone install. I'm just not sure about vLite. Is it good/worth it?

Oops, so I should rather not use the standalone?

    Agree

To OP: I would install it unless there is a known issue with some hardware or software installed on your computer. For the most part though, sp1 is no big deal.. I've installed on countless machines without issues. I also did not see the speed increase or anything else some notice... all my machines and those I loaded seem to work the same.

But then all had their other updates current.

I don't see how SP1 on Vista could make things worse, so go for it...

I've installed SP1 and had no problems, install it. Also, I agree with the previous posters saying you should install it via WU.

if you install as a standalone there are cases of wu not "seeing" it and requesting all the the updates that lead to the wu version to be reinstalled this has killed a number of systems that already has sp1 installed by reinstalling some of the pre sp1 updates..

Install it and feel the difference(The noticeable difference is the speed of copying files, for me )

Just Install it and Also after installing ti clean up the installer.

WU is asking me to install Vista Service Pack. Does this mean that I have no or very little chance of drivers getting screwed up ? Supposedly, if WU alone finds installing SP1 suitable then the installation should run smoothly ?

If WU is offering you SP1, then you likely do not have one of the problematic drivers. I did, but used the standalone installer and all went well anyway.

This may be a silly question, but if someone decides to forgo SP1 now, can they download SP2 in the future, if need be, with no problems? I'm sure the answer to that is yes considering SP2 will have everything from SP1 as well as the new stuff, but I want to be sure.
