Question for the experts and we have lots of them here. :) I installed Vista on my T60 and after the OS install I checked device manager and saw a couple of missing drivers, "Finger Print Reader and the Power Manager Driver and I manually installed them.

I then went to Lenovo's website and it states this driver is critical. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62939

It says I must install it after the initial install and after updates to the base OS. Prior to installing the Chipset driver I checked device manager for entries under "processors and system devices". I counted all entries and compared them after I installed the Intel Chipset driver.....they were the same.

So is this driver even necessary?

Depends on the install method you used. When I checked the website there are some conditions. So depending on which one you did that should answer the ?.

If you use the Product Recovery function shipped with your ThinkPad to restore the Windows preload environment, you do not need this package.

This package is required when you install Windows operating systems without the Product Recovery function.

It was a fresh install of Windows Vista OEM. What's strange is there were no changes in the drivers list so that baffles me and why I questioned installing it in the first place.

    Thanks for the reply.

It could've deleted the older driver and replaced by a new one. Sometimes Vista has already all the latest drivers, if not it will detect it and ask you when updating. As long as the component works, no problem.
