Should college students in the coming fall wait for windows 9?

The Windows 8 dilemma: Win 8 or wait for 9? • The Register

I read this article. Didn't understand much of it but I heard that there is something called windows 9 coming out soon and I was wondering if its arrival would make alot of my programs obsolete or force me to redownload them in a new form. They keep mentioning these things called "OS" and "IT" and I think the second one is probably information technology but I don't see what that has to do with anything.

I am thinking of buying this tablet when it comes out probably in Setpember and I guess windows 9 may not be on it. HP News -ÂHP Enhances Mobile Offerings with Business-focused Detachable PC If I really want this tablet, what should I do? Get it even thought it does not have windows 9?

I also heard intel is going to make a new chip called "M" for tablets so I am super confused. Is the chip related to windows 9?

Stuff I use: onenote, powerpoint, excel, python, matlab, f.lux gmail offline, skype. Are these all going stop working?

Windows is famous for its backwards compatibility, so you're very likely not going to have to repurchase any software you buy now. This applies to the "full" versions of Windows, so that excludes things like 8.1 RT and the like.

Anyway, if you need to buy a tablet now, buy a tablet. Otherwise, wait until you actually need one.

I wouldn't really bother about OS version. After all, you can get a Windows OS for free from pretty much any uni.

Or for very cheap. I can't get copies for ~$20. Nevermind that the CS department's Dreamspark gives me all the MS stuff for free.

If people don't like the user interface of Windows 8.x, it's very easy to change with third-party software (and there are a lot of refined, inexpensive or free products out there right now that do just that). If Windows 9 has day one reliability issues or bugs, that's much harder on an end user, and it could pop up on you unexpectedly and ruin your day in the middle organic chemistry or Japanese or whatever. I think a student would be better off getting a Win8.1 machine for fall and, once Win9 proves stable, upgrading later (as others noted, students get new versions of Windows very cheap).

Nonsense. Whatever gives you that idea? All of the programs you mention will work fine on any Windows OS you pick, from XP to Vista to Win7 to Win8.x. It sounds like you don't really know nor care too much about OS versions or their subtle or not-so-subtle differences. If that is correct, just get the hardware you think you need, with the OS it comes with. Done.
