I hate people who ILLEGALLY download copyrighted materials like movies, songs, games, and other applications. Why don't operating systems have a embedded feature that at the first sign of detecting piracy, the OS automatically sends the info to a master server, then automatically deletes itself? The info to the master server could log the system info, the exact crime, and also the OS serial number, so that OS serial number can never be regisrered again. This way at the first sign of piracy, the person is punished for their illegal actions.
Maybe have the OS detect only known violations such as illegal copies of X software/game/movie/songs that have already been circulating over the internet, so when the OS bans, it is 100% error-free. Maybe make it similar to how VAC bans for Steam games such as Counter-Strike. Your thoughts?
-
-
I think from here on it becomes a matter of human rights, but since Im not familiar with digital property rights (or whatever the technical term is) I won't expand on it.
-
Nothing is 100% error free. Also, I could see if it was Microsoft or Apple placing code in the OS to check for piracy in their own applications...but why would they care about other software developers? Let the music/movie industry or software developer worry about their own piracy issues, instead of placing it all on the OS maker.
Just look at the uproar people are already giving just because MS is cracking down on media piracy. Imagine if Windows just up and reformatted one day. -
because if they did what would happen if it made a mistake? and you can actually download free legal software ex. Limewire file sharing network

If you have been around a few months ago and read about the problems some people were having in getting Vista to install then you would be aware that your dream operating system has already been invented. Unfortunately, Vista sometimes refuses to install even when it is legal.

Anyways, maybe if certain products weren't such a rip off there would less pirating, i.e. Photoshop, some software, movies, and some music.
Anyways its not pirating, its borrowing and using it yourself. -
VALVe claims their VAC bans are accurate, right? Why not model it after VAC, and maybe get VALVe to help them? Like only ban detected and known illegal materials???
-
We are not going to start that debate at all. Borrowing it and using it yourself...still piracy cause you stole the program. End of story. -
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
I don't care.
And yes I do need those programs
P.S. What I meant by "rip off" is that the program is overpriced for what it is. -
yeah there would be legal problems here especially if it made a mistake and mistook a legal copy for an illegal one. also microsoft do count on pirated copies as well as the ones they make money out of, it's all about maintaining their domination. imagine if people couldnt afford to buy windows or didnt want to and cuz they couldnt get the illegal software, they opted for something like ubuntu. so this guy eventually CAN afford windows but why wud he after having used and gotten used to ubuntu. now imagine thousands of ppl liek that, microsoft will begin losing ground at some point.
also ppl will not buy the latest windows, they may opt for an older one that can be purchased second hand and perfectly legal, microsoft wont make any money on this second hand user.
but finally, there will always be people out there who will find a way to crack the system and trick it or delete the erasing feature, then microsoft will have spent all that money for nothing -
I don't know if I'd consider software or media a ripoff. The hours that go into the development are typically worth the price. Not to mention the support you get with it (software-wise) like tech calls/email, free hotfixes. Though the price on Photoshop, specifically, is a bit erroneous, I'm sure Adobe can justify that. Plus, if you ask some developers, a lot of software is underpriced based on what goes into it.
Are you insinuating that a product should be considered a ripoff if there is a similarly featured FREE alternative? And since there are already free alternatives to many products, why do people still pirate them? There must be a reason people pick Photoshop over The GIMP. You might say that the reasons are worth the money.
Who knows, maybe the Federal government will mandate that anti-piracy code be written in OS's in the future. Laws have a really hard time catching up with technology though. -
But people may eventually need the newer OS because in the future, XP may be obsolete? And for those that try to crack the OS, then why doesn't the OS also autodetect wrongdoing, and delete itself for that, too? Maybe have up to 3 warnings before action?

"Lets all jump on the criticize usapatriot bandwagon because he voiced his opinion".
Yeah, I still consider it a rip-off.
And free alternatives sometimes aren't as good and the paid ones are too expensive.
Why the hell do you care so much anyways henry? -
What you are doing is ILLEGAL, and it sickens me how you defend yourself!
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
Well my uses for Photoshop would be to edit and correct pictures, I do not use it often but it has the features that I need so therefore its too expensive to purchase if I needed it.
Why does it sicken you? -
You don't need to edit and correct pictures, do you? Either buy it legally or don't use it at all!
And your nickname is "usapatriot"... Isn't it unpatriotic what you are doing? Do you realize you are breaking the law??? -
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
I do need to edit and correct pictures because I am an avid photographer.
And do not question my Patriotism over the matter of whether you believe I am breaking the law or not.
It makes no sense.
And as a side note if I receive negative rep one more time by anyone I will send it right back to you because I am simply stating my opinion. -
Herein lies the debate about software. Could I walk into the apple store and pick up Adobe CS3 and walk out with it? Of course not, I can't "borrow" it no matter what the use is. Obtaining it illegaly under the guise of the internet is still stealing. My dilemma was that I am a graphics hobbyist and certainly can't justify 2k for Adobe CS3 and I will not steal it just to is it for a second or year. Since I can't really afford that I go with freeware alternatives like Paint.net, GIMP, Scribus, PS Elements 3.0 (technically free, came with my Wacom Tablet), KompoZer and so on. While they are not all integrated and as well refined as Adobe CS3 they are legal. I cannot justify stealing for a hobby or anything else and so that is why I made the choice to seek out and learn alternatives or if I really want Adobe CS3 then I should work for it at a second job or whatever.

So you use an illegal copy of Photoshop for your work? Wow, that is even worse, in my opinion! How do you think your customers will react if/when they are told their services that they have purchased were produced illegally?
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
I am not saying I use an illegal copy of photoshop, anyways I do not sell any of my work.
-
So what if you don't sell your work? Then why do you insist you need your ILLEGAL downloaded copy of Photoshop??? It is an illegal copy if you attained it illegally...
-
I agree with the OP. Extreme measure - but why not? Prerogative and copyright holders should use it
As for paid software, either stump up the cash or get freeware. Simple. If you don't have the money - tough. Welcome to life -
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
But if I would barely use it, but it was essential why would I pay for the full product?
-
IMO the REAL pirates are the ones who hack the ISO's and upload them to sharing servers for all. It fits the very definition of piracy, and should be punished much harder. You could say it would be cutting it off at the source.
-
I hate it when stupid kids go around defending piracy and taunt that nobody can stop them. Something should be done!

If someone stole a camera and put it on the porch of my house, I am going to take it. -

And that is why I propose this idea... Make a penalty!

usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
Funny, because I actually hate Photoshop and would never use it (its far too complicated) so I just use Paint.net, but if I were to actually use Photoshop seriously, I would really be hesitant to pay for it and would look for other alternatives on the web.
You guys have a point, I wouldn't pirate software unless I actually needed it, which I don't. -
You could buy a one-year liscence for some software... Or can't you go to a professional place like a cyber cafe and pay to use certain programs for an hour or two??? Your logic and arugment is flawed!
-
-
If you illegally download something, it is illegal. Please, stop your immiture attitude. I already gave you a negative feedback.
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
But as far as I would know someone could have bought it and put it on the porch of my house, so I wouldn't know if it was really stolen.
-
I agree, but in your statement you said someone "stole" a camera which meant that in that case you would have known it was stolen and I was just rebutting your argument. I'm just glad that we live in America and we can voice our opinions and I do respect the right for you to voice your's.

I said that but I would not really know now would I?
Thank you, unfortunately some other members do not respect that right.
Anyways I only buy what I am really going to use, if I am just going to play around with the software and try it before I actually decided to buy it downloading is good. -
Say you buy an OS. If you break the OS EULA, can't they terminate your OS license at anytime?
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
If I bought it, I own it, therefore I do whatever I want with it. -
If you need to use some software for a short time, why don't you go to a CYBER CAFE???
-
-
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
I do not use Photoshop.
Look, admit it, not all of us make the money we need to buy certain things, with gas prices through the roof, insurance costs sky high, and expensive property taxes every year sometimes you cant justify paying $600 for simple home use of Photoshop, maybe they should have different licensee types. -
Given that the majority of people use Windows, and that windows isn't good about being sure that itself is pirated, much less tell whether OTHER things are pirated, it's rather a nice pipe-dream.
You're also neglecting that some people don't go on the web (but pirating is still perfectly possible). I would also simple deny that connection activity if I was an end user (basically your plan has so many holes that even if someone WAS good enough to be able to detect pirated things, being able to do what you suggest is highly unlikely). -

I hope some of you get banned for advocating piracy, and admitting to it. Even this message board has rules.
Should operating systems auto-delete itself at first sign, EVERYTIME?
