I was losing roughly 1GB of free space on my SSD every week yet i wasn't downloading anything onto it, the only thing installed on it is my W7 OS

So i ran 'WinDirStat' to see where all my freespace was going and was surprised to find i had over 50GB of temporary internet files on there!!!

This is despite the fact i have my internet options set to "delete browsing history on exit" so what gives here, why are these files filling up my SSD and not being deleted automatically? thanks.

could be you backup restore points. i had 44gb last time i looked.
just delete them as it always keeps the last one.

There will always be some temp files that stay there for a while. Usually, i don't have a problem with this, they always get cleaned with normal windows usage once in a while. I'm at the same space usage give or take 1GB ever since i installed windows. During the first month, space shrunk a little, but now it's rather steady. As MrDj said, if you didn't limit system restore space, then restore points might be taking a bit of space by now. I'd give CCleaner a run as well to check for temp files, i run it once in a while myself, but i don't seem to have more the 300MB of temp files at worse.

I run disk cleanup once a month (the windows utility).
All restore point data is stored in the heavily protected folder "System Volume Information" of the particular partition.
50 GIG Temp internet files is HUGE - what browser are you using ? And do you have a limit set (if you use IE9) Tools- internet options - browsing history - settings - Disk space to use (I set it to 50 MB)

I run CCleaner a couple of times a week. I usually also run it before doing a defrag.
