Shutdowns, Sleep, Hibernate. They are all the same to me.

Seriously, if I see another one of my coworkers standing around waiting for the laptop to shutdown, I'm going to chuck it at them.....

As much as I try to educate them about Sleep and Hibernate modes, I can't seem to get their heads wrapped around the fact that it isn't 1990 anymore. Computer technology has moved on.

I've already removed the shutdown buttons from the desktops. All you can do is logoff. It became annoying when I had to walk around the office making sure all the desktops were powered on before they can be fully imaged for the night.

I should do the same thing for the laptops. But I'm afraid I'm going to get bombarded with phone calls.

"How do I turn it off?"

    "You don't."

    "What?"

    "Just close the lid"

"And it turns off by itself?"

    "Yup, it's magic."

    "Really?"

    Click.

LOL. That's part of any IT support job. Don't expect the layman to understand. You don't know how many times the IT guys lauded me because I "got" it compared with everyone else. They would try to walk me through something and I'd just tell them what I needed to do but didn't have authority to do so. They loved me...

Going to hibernate takes longer time than shutting down in my laptop, but resuming from hibernate is quicker with Windows 7.

it's not the business of the company to 'get' IT.

It is ITs responsibility to 'get' the company and the business.

Arguably, it should be the other way around.

IT department's budgets are greatly affected by upper management (business). Yet IT departments usually have very little say in upper management. IT has traditionally fallen under the responsibility of Financial VPs. Only recently has businesses created the position of a CIO/CTO.

IT will always be subordinates to upper management. Thus it is the duty of upper management to understand where they are leading the IT department....

I'm fortunate to have the ear of the VPs in my case. Otherwise, who knows what they will end up buying (whatever the salesman recommends :shudder: ) and what they will end up cutting out of the budget(they have the combined IT experience of a high school teenager).

post on the intranet news a tip: "Why not to shutdown a PC"

we post similar tips trough our Internet to reduce support calls if we want people to change behavior. as we spread it as tips, it's "cool" to have the knowledge, and they spread it themselves around each other, teaching all including new persons.

    works great.

If you have lot of things going on and/or have not restarted for a long time, hibernating does take a long time. But resuming is always way quicker.
Hibernation is the way to go. I would use sleep if my battery was not half-dead and if my laptop did not have the habit of waking up by itself for no reason.

This is akin to sending out a memo.......

Unless I start it with the heading, I will sabotage the payroll system!, it will go through one ear and out the other.

Plus, 85% of what you read is forgotten after a week.
