Hello guys. I have a problem with the shutting down my laptop. Ok so a lot of times, when I go to start menu and try to shut my laptop down, it does either 2 things.

1: It goes to the screen that says "logging off" and then it gets stuck there forever until i hold on to my power button to force it to turn off.

2: The screen turns black and it gets stuck and the same happens as #1.

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem? Because I think if I force close my laptop too much it will die out.

One possibility is hardware & drivers.

If I disconnect my USB hubs (with 3 external HDDs and 1 CD/DVD drive) the same will happen - the devices will not be "removed" in Windows.

I suspect an internal device doesn't respond - or turns itself off without the OS noticing, resulting in the OS waiting for a response...

    At least under Vista.

Under XP I had the issue sporadically.

    So:
    What OS do you use.
    Any external devices?
Did it always happen, occur out of nowhere, after an update?

The event logs may help also.

Also, try exiting all open applications before shutting down. Could be a .exe that is causing issues.

    OOOOO!!!

steven518, you got the same problem as I experienced before.
Everytime, when shutting down the laptop, the screen will freeze/hang.
That time I was totally frustrated.

    Why this problem occurs?
Basically, changing of MBR or disturbance of MBR/MBR corrupted will cause this problem.

    Solution:
Sorry, I am not sure. You need to re-install the original MBR for your laptop.
Your MBR is located in the recovery partition. You need to search for these files from your recovery partition:
    mbrwrdos.exe
    rtmbr.bin

    Once localised, open command prompt.
    Key-in mbrwrdos.exe install rtmbr.bin

    After finish, restart your computer.

I am not sure this solution can solve your problem.

If not mistaken, it called Master Boot Record.

Usage of MBR is about booting.
    For example:
If MBR damaged or malfunction, it can your booting function unstable.
Like you are not able to shutdown properly. Unable to format your computer using the build-in recovery partition.
