Is the "purple" fringe you are talking about? I am running at the default 96 DPI and only see this "fringe" around one gadget in my Sidebar. Before IE8 that magenta color around the perimiter, was not present.

Check to see if you have a difference if you revert back to the standard DPI.
Just curious.

it's ok if I change the dpi back to 96.. just cant use my laptop cause everything is unreadably small

I only see it with just the one gadget, but I am running, as I said, at 96 DPI. Have you seen any reports of this elsewhere?
Gary -
No, nothing.. tried to find a solution but nothing..
I have a few gadgets without any problem and others with this magenta or purple thing -
I'm having the exact same problem with IE8 under Vista 64 bit. In addition, I saw that my CPU usage went up to 50-100% constantly after upgrading to IE8. I found a few similar reports of this elsewhere, but so far no solution. Therefore, I went back to IE7 and FF for now...
I would be glad, too, if someone came up with a solution for this problem...
Thanks in advance!! -
I have this problem with IE8 and gadgets in Vista at high DPI's also. I've googled around about it and it seems to be somewhat rare but we are not alone. Win 7 doesn't have the problem, just Vista.
I've been told that the sidebar uses Internet Explorer to render the gadgets (might be wrong here, but that's what I've been told by a gadget developer) and apparently IE8 must interact with Vista a bit differently than IE7 does.
Edit: I had the high CPU problem also, but only with certain gadgets (like the default clock gadget and a few others). Other gadgets didn't spike the CPU... -
Maybe MS will be able to patch this before IE8 becomes part of the routine Windows update - let's keep fingers crossed...

I dont have high cpu usage.. but hope MS going to do something with this
-
just installed IE8 today on all my systems.
regretfully all the systems are having the same purple border. -
I have this problem with IE8 and gadgets in Vista at high DPI's also.
The only thing i find out is no HIGH CPU of sidebar.exe of 50% constantly if you set the DPI to 96 or 120DPI.
Dont use CUSTOM DPI then you will have this problem of high CPU of sidebar.exe and that the sidebar gadgets will have purple fringes around. -
i didnt adjust any DPI that's the weird part.

After this issue was not fixed by MS and I had spent several frustrating hours installing IE8 and removing it from my system again twice I now switched to Firefox. I have to say it took me 1-2 days to completely get used to it and customize the way I want, but now I think it is much faster+more stable and I'm overall more happy with it than I was with IE before. Plus, I have the feeling of having the latest and hopefully most secure generation of web browsers - problem solved for me!

I just had this problem on both my Vista laptop and my Win7 desktop.
The 'fix' (workaround) was to re-register three 'critical' .dlls and then to toggle the screen resolution up and down a few times. -
hmm... which .dlls and how?

it didnt work on mine either.
-
did both of you guys register the three .dlls, reboot, then run the screen dpi up and down a few times with reboots in between?
I've read things where the re-registering fixes things, the dpi toggling fixes things, or doing both fixes things. Haven't seen (until today) a report of neither of the methods working. -

I registered all three and rebooted. I am using the default DPI, so I didn't do anything with that. The one gadget with the magenta fringe still has it.
Gary -
I am running IE 8 too and I don't see any purple fringes in the sidebar gadgets.
I used to get those fringes sometimes after resuming from hibernation, but they disappear after the desktop is fully loaded. -
toggle the resolution up and down from your nominal and then go back to nominal.
Sidebar with IE8 on high DPI -> purple fringe
