Vista Home Premium was preloaded on my laptop at purchase.

It shows as being SP1 in the system screen from Control Panel.

I downloaded SP2 from Microsoft. When executing it quickly tells me that I need to install SP1 first. I downloaded SP1 and executed it. It quickly told me I already have SP1.

It is apparent that Yossarian (from Catch 22) is the new Sr Vp of Technical at Microsoft being recently reinstated after his previous banishment soon after he invented Windows Me.

What else have you installed on your system, and have you done any tweaking to the OS?

I've read quite a few similar threads where SP1 is required, but it's already installed. I recommend using your Vista install disc and performing a repair action. Once finished, try installing SP2.

*edit* To save tons of time, the OP should google for "vista sp2 requires sp1 already installed", read every thread, try all of the suggestions, and then come back and post a summary of everything tried.
