Allllrighty. I downloaded Vista SP1 directly, but I'm holding off on installing it. Apparently my system has one of those problematic drivers on it (Sigmatel HD Audio v6.10.5365), and Gateway hasn't got off their butts and released an updated version.

Sigmatel is of no use; they farmed off their audio division to IDT. IDT is of no use either; they just tell you to contact the OEM.

Anybody know of a location where I can download the latest version that'll work with Vista SP1?

Go to the Gateway website. I got mine off Dell.

I had this exact same problem last night which forced me to stay up till 2am to finally download SP1.

Since you have a Gateway, I'm not sure as to what you can do. I have a Vaio FE which I downloaded the driver for a FZ and installed it.

    Heres the thread:

Maybe head over to the Gateway Forums and see if anyone has the updated driver?

    Like I said...

I already checked. I'm betting that my system isn't the only one out there that has this sigmatel audio chip.

IDT mentioned something that I'm noticing to be true. Gateway tends to take their sweet time putting up updated drivers. Usually I just go to the part vendor's site and download the driver myself, but unfortunately the Sigmatel drivers happen to be one that you can't just get from the original vendor. :\

Thanks for the link. I'm trying something right now to see if it'll work.

What I did was download the Gateway driver and download the Sony driver, and made a hybrid of sorts. With any luck it'll work..... hopefully. :D

I created a restore point just in case it doesn't.

Also, here is another option. I got this from another NBRer. This method, download the driver for a Vaio, Dell or what have you. Use this program (uniextractor) to extract the various parts of that download file. Snoop around the folder you extracted it to and you should find the IDT execute file.

    It works.. :)

What I did was download the older v6.10.5365 driver from Gateway. Then I downloaded the updated driver from Sony.

Using WinRAR I extracted both to separate directories.

In the directory with the Sony/Updated driver, there's a subfolder called "WDM". I deleted all the .INF files in that directory. I then copied the remaining files from that directory and overwrote the older files in the WDM folder for the Gateway download.

I then ran the setup file in the main directory.

After the install a few reboots it picks up the audio device again. When you check the driver for the audio device, INITIALLY it says that it's still 6.10.5365, BUT if you look at the driver details, the actual driver components are the updated files.

I'm guessing that the driver version info is written into one of the INF's.

The reason I did it this way was because the Sony drivers would not just install on their own. It's the same audio device, but the INF's have data written into them that check the machine type.

Now I've just got to work up the guts to install SP1. :D I think I'm going to create a ghost image of my HD first just in case. :)

Thanks, and thanks for the help in locating the drivers! :)

This was easy though (just needed to find the drivers). The hardest driver nut I've ever had to crack was about six years ago when I was tasked with trying to fix a Leaf MicroLumina SCSI based camera. The blasted version of InstallShield only worked on Win98/NT, and I was trying to get the damn camera working on (the then new) WindowsXP.

Leaf wouldn't help, and neither would InstallShield.

It took two days, but I got that S.O.B. working (much to the surprise of the morons at Leaf). :D
