Does zooming cause loss of quality when viewing jpg files, in like windows photo gallery? I would say no, but I've heard that rotating causes loss of quality, so just wondering.

No, zooming does not cause the loss of quality. As it just reads the file, it does not modify the file.

In the case of rotating, it does not modify the file as well if you 'do not save the file'. however, in windows photo gallery, i believe when you do something (ie rotate) to the picture and you close the program, it automatically save the picture.

Correct me if im wrong ... as i dont use windows photo gallery anymore

It depends on the quality of the original pics. Many pics would blurr when zooming in due to low pixel quality

    cheers ...

I do not liket rotating pictures in Vista using Windows Photo Gallery or its shell extension because:

    1. It degrades the picture quality.
(Noticeable when you rotate and then reset a picture to its earlier state).
    2. It adds "Microsoft Windows Photo Gallery 6.0..." to Program Name metadata.

I prefer JPEG Lossless Rotator (freeware) for rotating pictures and it does a great job.

So yes zooming in does visually degrade appearance. If you do not change the file it will not degrade the master. If you have the space, always good to save original file.

if only zoom, there is no quality loss, unless what you mean by zooming is resize it to bigger size, then yes, it will have quality loss.

as for rotating, it does casue quality loss, you can compare by one original image, while the other one, rotate clockwise four times to its original position and see the result.

Zooming in doesn't degrade the picture. What you're seeing is the pixel size changing. Viewing an image doesn't change it's quality and this goes when it's rotated.
