I recently purchased a TV tuner for my desktop, but I lack software to cut out the commercials in what I record. Any recommendations? Free is preferred, of course.

I haven't done this in awhile, but TMPGE has mpeg tools which allows you to cut and merge mpeg files. It is only a 30 day trial, but the mpeg tools work after the trial expires.

What format does your tuner record to? I've used Avid Free on and off in the past, but unfortunately it only supports one format - Quicktime. But it is fairly simple and costs $0.00.

Virtual Dub? Or one of its variants, like VirtualDub-MPEG2. It has a learning curve, but is free.

Video Re-do is the one that I have heard the most about.

It converts the ms-dvr files to Mpeg without rendering, and then lets you edit out the commericials.

I also have to recommend Video Re-do. It is kind of expensive but it does its job very well and is also very quick. It also has commercial detection which works pretty good.
