Why doesn't Yahoo simplify their front page into something like Google. In general, people want a homepage that will load very quickly and this is why most choose Google. I think that there are lot of people out there that would ditch Google as their homepage if Yahoo did this. Would you?

I wouldn't. Google uses a different search engine and technique for searching and ranking the results which I think works better than Yahoo's engine.

Besides, Yahoo knows it can't compete with Google in terms of having a simple interface, so they try to cram their main page will many different things that they offer in an attempt to say "look at all the things WE have that google doesn't".

Google is more of a search engine. Yahoo is more of a web portal.
The same way MSN is more of a web portal and Live.com is more of a search engine.

Why should Yahoo change? I'm quite happy with them being the scum of the search engines (no offence to people that like yahoo). :D

I choose yahoo as my homepage, I want instant news, stocks and all kinds of useful info in my homepage, not just an empty search box.
search box, I had that function in firefox already!

Yahoo's strategy is to be a web portal. Every year or so, they redesign their page to fit bigger ads in.

Personally, I liked their page around 2000. You could click through the topic list and find a cool and relevant site by clicking through. Today, the focus of the page is "10 easy dinners in 1 hour" and some obnoxious Ford advertisement. There's only 4 relevant areas on the frontpage, compared to 8 advertisement spaces. The portals list is a tiny thing on the left, the search box is still there, the webmail link uses some weird hover-over link, and the news is half infotainment, 1/4 propoganda, and 1/4 speculation. I only use Yahoo! for mail: I have a direct link to my inbox from iGoogle and Opera Speed Dial.

I love Gmail so much I host all my domains email through Google apps. The main thing I hate about other mail services is that the spam filter is rubbish, I've used Gmail for 2-3 years and only had one spam message get through.

I agree that Google is great, but like just about everything else, competition makes things better. I'm just naturally nauseated by the idea of one company having such a hold on the users attention.

Yahoo's front page is not just a search page like google's. I don't think most people use google as their home page. Everyone I know use yahoo instead.

I bet Google is the homepage of choice by a large margin over any other search engine or web portal or whatever. It is mine too! But I think the main reason is because it is so simple and it loads so quickly. If someone else could come close to matching the search feature, I think people would switch.

I have Firefox's start page as my homepage, which is essentially just Google search with a firefox icon above it.

Personally, I started using them to give them hope so MS wouldn't get them. Since then, I think its better then google.
    No offense everyone.

Then i'd have to add BitTorrent, insta-bookmark buttons, context menu options, new tab button, shrink to tray, IRC client, opera-like download manager, the "glasses" button, and some other stuff i'd miss along with Speed Dial. I just prefer Opera.

Exactly, if both of them serve the same function it would be redundant to maintain both side by side. MSN is the web portal, a competitor to Yahoo, and Live.com is the search engine, a competitor to Google.

Yes but, they can be accessed through hundreds of addons.
So in reality Firefox is the most flexible browser on earth.

If you go to the page and press Control-F5, I'm sure it will take longer, caching speeds things up heaps. And for people like me, who have to use lots of different computers that don't have my usual sites cached, Google wins hands down.

After clearing my cache, both pages loaded slower, with Google beating Yahoo! out by a little. Pics included. But if you look at my Yahoo! picture, you could see that there are lots and lots of graphics and text compared to Google.

No wonder Yahoo loads slower - there's more stuff and you're using the slow and buggy My Yahoo! page.

So it would seem that Google is the king daddy of all search engines. Time has a way of dealing crushing blows to the mighty. I wonder how long it will take before the word Google is seen as an object of the past. And then I wonder how Google will react as the door closes on them.

I can remember when a "google" was a quantitative measurement for the amount of rain droplets falling from the sky.

I only switched to Google when they launched GMail. It revolutionized mail size limits! I still remember the days when I had to check my Yahoo Mail EVERYDAY because of its stupid 4 MB limit. It'd get filled in less than a week. And no one likes those annoying bounce messages. Then came GMail with 1 GB [was invited because I was a blogspot/blogger.com member]. lol.

I only use Yahoo for Yahoogroups now. I have a Yahoo ID but when I join/create a group, the e-mail address I enter is GMail. I just use my Yahoo ID to sign in. :D

I, for some reason, like Yahoo! a lot more than Google. I search with Google, but use Yahoo! for almost everything else.

Yahoo and Google are not the same animal. As stated before Yahoo, like MSN, is a web portal, and Google is a search engine. If you want a fast loading homepage, use about:blank ;)
