OEM is tied to one machine and can't be moved once installed.
Retail can be moved to another machine.

Yea, I thought that the difference is that OEM you have to purchase with hardware, but you can move it to another machine if uninstalled from original machine?

    No.

This has been discussed over and over again. Please look around a bit and check out one of the existing OEM threads.

Legally, you have buy the OEM version with a piece of hardware.

The OEM license, once installed on a computer, is tied to that computer.

hrmmm...but often campus stores sell oem copies to college students at a reduced price that aren't linked to any hardware.....

or does it automatically bind you to the first piece of hardware you install it on?

It gets linked to what you first install it on.

Plus full retial gives you rights for the free x64 upgrade. OEM is only x86 or x64 you dont get both in the same purchase.
