I've recorded video on my XP desktop...when I transfer the video to my Vista notebook, the video plays back skewed. It's stretched to tall. This happens in any media player I use. What's going on with that

Depends on what type of video, and what media players. There are sometimes programs that only allow you to view the video if you have the program installed which has some sort of secret codec.

That sounds like the aspect ratio that the video player is getting is screwed up somehow, that it plays with the video overlay expecting one aspect ratio, and it getting a different one. How to fix it, I wish I knew. I've never seen it happen before, unfortunately, or heard of it. Maybe disable overlays in your video hardware, or perhaps check the encoding of the video to make sure it has the proper settings? Does the video play properly on your XP desktop?
