A lot of the newer laptops (like HP QuickPlay 2.0 launches movies and music without booting Windows) are coming out with a feature (a button actually) that will bypass the full OS boot and just run a DVD player, saving time and conserving the battery. Is there any software out there that will accomplish the same thing? I'm thinking something along the lines of starting in "safe mode" where it gives you the option to press a key to activate the alternate boot... But I'm no expert. You guys are :)

Any thoughts? I'm getting an Asus S96J with Windows XP Home, if it matters.

    Thanks!

Just one point; it is debateable that software like QuickPlay saves battery. Without booting to Windows, your powersaving measures may not be enabled. And if you are using RMClock or some other undervolting technique, that savings will be lost too.

You could probably fit VLC media player and a small Linux in the tiniest of USB drives. Can your Laptop boot from a USB?

try to install linux , if you know how to customize things , or you could get one of those Media Center Linux distros and install'em. Some of them would work on a USB Drive as well
