thinking of removing skype all together and just go disqus all together.

eventually MS will force 7.36 to update too or it'll render us unable to login. a load of crap.

I worked on this Skpe thing for a family member (older, they cant deal w/ Skpe 8+, and they need it to chat w/ grandchildren & ****... MS so bummed them out on their skpe forced update, I spent a cpl hrs on it to help-out, but no dice). Tried all the workarounds (except the above).

Crux: I was able to get 7.36 working for messaging, but once call audio/video started 7.36 would crash. Is your Audio/Video working on calls? Thanks!

I still haven't tested video and audio calls but the workaround above is just to stop the forced updates from microsoft... has nothing to do with video calls and audio. That's a problem most likely due to servers. Test with http://www.skaip.org/skype-7-41-0-101-for-windows <-

Again, not a Skype user... but I want to help out some older family members w/ their Old Skype.

Is Audio and Video working on hmm, what vers., like 7.36 or 7.41 (maybe 7.36). I can set their Skype up and they can text away, but once Audio and Video are attempted , 'crash'. As you mentioned it's likely a server thing (makes sense),, however, just checking if you've had success w/ Audio and Video calls on any older Skpe vers. Thanks !!

Have a few contacts on skype nowadays (pretty much don't talk there) but I'll test it in the end of the day with another account that I have and I'll give you feedback here. Not on my computer right now, typing from my phone

7.40 was the last "good" version where they haven't removed the auto update disable option. If anyone wants to try it let me know and I can upload it somewhere. Don't know if there's a link of it already somewhere, this was sent to me by someone a while back.

Try: www.skaip.org and you can download all versions so far (yes even the very old ones) and they have a VBS script for disabling updates in all versions of skype as well.

The link for their vbs script:
    http://uploads.skaip.org/2018-01/DisableSkypeUpdater.vbs

Source code of this script is here:
    https://gist.github.com/tamr/f8a9ffd7a02c0da7ca89297ea04012d3

    Enjoy it!

I did use it (7.41 skype and the script above and works great)

Another thing: I'm using this version: 7.41.0.101

All working! Haven't tested video and calls but they should work normally :)

I would honestly like to be a fly on the wall of the skype meeting where someone actually imagined going with the changes in v8+ was a good idea, and everyone else agreeing with him. It's insane what they did.

Nothing older than v. 8 working here. Mar 4,2019. Win 7. Tried all the tricks available on the internet. Any solution to skype 7 not connecting? Tried skype_7.36.0.101, skype_7.41.0.101, same thing - tries to connect forever...

Speaking of these older skype versions, has anyone else noticed this strange behavior:

Sometimes after the laptop is brought back from sleep (windows 10 and skype 7.x had been running), skype process uses constantly about 30% CPU. If I exit or kill it in task manager and open it again, it works fine, no more high CPU usage. It's strange that this doesn't happen every time and skype still works while in that state. Only reason I noticed is the fan made way more noise than usually.

Well crap. Since yesterday my skype 7.40 won't connect anymore. I can login but the little dot next to my face just keeps spinning and spinning. Wonder if they are actively finding way to block old versions. I'll try to uninstall and check 7.41 which was mentioned above... fingers crossed.

Edit: looks like there are indeed some problems. I'll wait until Monday, maybe it fixes itself :)

It started working again now. I haven't done anything.

I'm using 7.40.32.103 and everything works fine on it (video calls too).

I tried everything imaginable to help out a older couple, friend/family, who use skpe to keep in touch w/ their grandkids. They can't wrap their heads around new Skpe, so I tried everything (changing permissions on the Temp file in App Data Local / Temp -Everyone (deny), to installing a Portable). Nothing worked. Im all ears if anyone stumbles across a fix... but it looks like MS wants to bury entries for Skype for Desktop in ones registry, hidden telemetry, et. Hopefully a workaround manifests, but w/ new server configs it's not looking promising for skpe fans.

I can't, I just cannot do it. I tried but I hate skype 8 so much when I see how they messed up all the features we used before on 7.x

Tried to install older versions, tried to run the update block vbs script as soon as it installed but nothing seems to work. Probably ms found a way to check and block anything 7.x from connecting.

For now I've ended up leaving an edge browser window open with web skype running. No notifications but I find that's actually beneficial for my productivity... I get distracted way less often.

TLDR: Screw you MS! You're not forcing skype 8 on me.
