Hey kind of a software question...

Recently I moved into an apartment at school with no cable in my room, so I have been watching TV on my laptop to fall asleep (JustinTV). I am weird and watching TV helps me get to sleep faster...(especially ESPN).

I was just wondering if there is a program out there that would put my laptop to sleep even if programs were running, Even better if it could hibernate my laptop. (or do both, not sure if the sound stops when its put to sleep).

    Thanks

Well, Sleep = Standby, as far as I am aware Windows Power Managment can do it.
But it'll still draw some power.

You can peruse the available Sidebars in which you can countdown or countup before the laptop will go to sleep, hibernate or turnoff.

You don't need any special program; you can just do that from power management. It sleeps after a certain amount of time without keyboard or mouse movement... it doesn't care whether programs are running or not.

no i am pretty sure it notices programs like TV ect, because anything else would be annoying and stupid.

Theres tons of apps to do timed shutdowns, not so sure about standbys, but it shouldnt really be an issue.
This one for instance, can do it:
    http://www.easyshutdown.com/

Not entirely free though, but its a nice app

In that case make it 2 layered - screensaver first.

I know my laptop switches the screen off when watching the BBC iplayer in fullscreen mode too - just move the mouse every 10 minutes :) - pretty suer if it can switch off the screen it can send it to standby.

Also - its is mouse an keyboard movement that counts - not running programmes.

Isn't it really the other way around? I know KMPlayer has an option that prevents the screensaver from turning on.

I know power management will blank the screen, regardless of what's going on. It happened to me during my first battery test while playing a DVD. I had to change it so that wouldn't happen. Not sure about sleep/hibernate though. You could always let it run on battery power, it will most certainly shut itself off that way.

That might increase battery wear though... at least in the long run.

Thanks for the help...I guess I should test to see if it the computer sleeps when I'm not trying to fall asleep myself. I just have been falling asleep then waking up and having to get up to shut the laptop. Thanks for the help

Does it? It literally only takes a minute to check.
