I have a Dell latitude CPX-J that was wiped and I'm trying to install windows 2000 on to it, (looks like it had NT before) but it is not going well.

It gets to the part where it is detecting devices and sits and sits I left it on overnight and it didn't even finish.

Installed 98 and it went ok but was flaky and I really need Win2k so I can use office 2003 for work.

    So any ideas?

Oh side not installed drive on a desktop and it installed fine, removed the Intel drivers and put back into the laptop and it did the same thing.

or even try to format/partition the drive before windows installation

I formated the drive fat32 and NFTS but didnt make a difference

The bios config I went through and defaulted it out then rechecked it.

I thinking it might be a memory issue any idea?

It's probably a non-standard ACPI configuration or something. That stuff plagues Linux, and sometimes hits Windows. Pull out any peripheral cards you aren't using, and disable any onboard devices you aren't using, and see if that helps. There's probably a single device responding with an out of band type response to a hardware probe that Windows is getting uppity about.
