Hi , I'm using windows 7 and computer start up time is high... like 1 minute ++.. what can i do to make it faster? I have defragged hard drive and reduced number of start up programs to minimum... what else can i do? i'm also inserting a screenshot of all my start up programs. Could u plz help me remove some of the not so important ones? I also have 5 gadgets on desktop on Start up so must i remove those to as i really need them.

Download ccleaner clean up the junk on your hard drive and your registry. I don't really like the Disc Defragger on windows, I use defraggler. Between these two programs, it will speed up your computer.
-
Done all that using cc cleaner , Smart defrag and tune up utilities... really i don't know why it is still so slow.
-
Might be spyware or malware. Download superantispyware and malwarebytes and do a scan.
-
Check in the log files under "Application and Service Protocolls" (something like this)
Then "Microsoft" -> "Windows" -> "Diagnostics Performance"
Or use the self diagnostics tool in my sig - see if anything delays your startup. -

I saw that you have defragged the hard drive, but have you defragged and optimized the BOOT files. See my signature line for info.

Ohh! I'm having a problem at startup too, except that in my case, it takes up to 3 to 5 minutes for the system to be ready!! It's really insane, I've defragmented my hard disc drives, cleaned the most applications loading at startup...
And really, with my i7 core + 1333Mhz RAM...and a fast HDD, I expect a much shorter startup time!
Anyone has an idea of where the problem might come from?
(I've already checked that all 8 "cores" are activated at startup) -
3 to 5 minutes - Vista or Win7?
On a laptop with plenty of applications 3 minutes is possible after some time of use.
On Windows 7 - shouldn't happen.
My first guesses would be:
Anti Virus? (KIS 2010 has a significant performance impact)
Bad drivers - try the self diagnostics utility in my sig - else, check the performance logs... -
Well I bought my laptop not long ago (something like 1 month)...and it's windows 7 64 bits pro.
So yes, it's really weird...I wonder why it's soo slow onthe startup
It's pretty fast on any tasks once it's ready though...
My antivirus is ... Nod32 and + norton protection and COMODO firewall that I installed.
Ok im running a diagnostic. -
Get autoruns from the Sysinternals Suite - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx
Research every entry (in the logon tab - leave all others alone) - if you cannot find any information on an entry leave it - only if you are certain that its junk that YOU added (you includes bloat from the manufacturer - stuff like Google desktop) untick it - see if it helps.
And else - check that self diagnostics utility - and click the link for logs in that... see if there is any driver problem.
Nod32 is just an anti virus - Comodo is just a firewall, so those work together.
What's "Norton Protection"? -
try disabling the TMM (if you don't ever use external monitor) and Sys Restore on startup.
Control Panel> Administrative Tools (use the small icons view) > Task Scheduler > Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > MobilePC (disable TMM), then SystemRestore (disable the "Startup" trigger, leave the daily one for safety)
and also i see that you use Tuneup Util. did you use the Live Optimization feature? it can boost the wrong progs at times >.< (so much for being smart)
one good deed deserves another, sean -
Once you loose an app on another screen...
Also, it doesn't gain you any time - if you are annoyed by the black screen flash - then move it to the boot sequence - which you can do in the task sheduler. -
dunno about your experiences, DetlevCM, but it sure speeds up boot on my lappy. and also disabling Superfetch for startup. somehow i prefer it that way.
-
That's pretty much all it takes - more is a driver issue.
Superfetch - do you actually know what it does? For 99% off all people that's a good thing.
Yes, it will lead to some HDD activity after startup - especially under Vista, but it makes use of that empty RAM you have. -
increases boot time by a good half a minute, and more. i timed it.
and i meant Superfetch for startup, NOT for programs. that also increases boot time by a good deal. and i do know what it does >.< -

I had posted a screenshot showing my start up apps earlier... can someone suggest which ones to close? Thanks. Also gary i'll try out ur program later on. I hope it helps... Boot times is becomming frustrating like vista.
-
Well... a startup time over a minute is not bad, depending on what you call startup. From pressing the power button to the desktop? Or to idle? Before upgrading to W7 + SSD, my T500 started up in more than 2 minutes or more, from power button press to desktop idle.
-
Since I switched on TPM (why not) its a bit slower.
-
just did the system defrag gary suggested. Hope it works.
p.S : Boot time dropped a lot... booted in 76s...
Also should i partion the hard drive in such a way that the boot partition smaller because i only have 1 partition, C drive. -

We have similar sistems and my start up time is 40sec with all start up programs so you should do about same. I checked your start up items and really there is not much that you can do. Clock utility if you're not using it and maybe change AV software, don't know about avast but some can slow down comp a lot. HP bloatware can slow down as well but only few are in the start up so IDK...
You are using TuneUp, so go to services and disable its services as they are useless IMO, except maybe Themes. If you're not using it, you can disable ethernet adapter, when you need it, just enable it back.
On more Q, did you play with TuneUp and Customize Windows? -
no i didn't... i have basically disabled all non essential services and only have essential programs in the screenshot in the first page... could u tell me which ones to remove?
-
I have hardly any programs installed though. -
ok i'll try partitioning but do i have to to clean install? Let's say i don't but when i move files to new partition , especially game and program ones , will the games and programs work?

You can only move files that are not installed, like I said, movies, music, documents.
You don't need to do clean install you can partition with Partitiion Magic. I think. But clean install would solve all your problems. A lot of people do not like that option until you have tried out everything else.
For defragmenting, try Mydefrag. -
thanks.. i'll adjust it using partition magic over the weekend. Also i'm regularly defragginb using smartdefrag so is it all right?
-
I guess it's OK didn't try it yet but MyDefrag is free and easy to use. It's also very good.
-
just stop those unnecessary start-up programs which will affect computer boot time a lot.
scan registry fully and defrag it by a free registry defrag software. -
Defragmenting the registry is not really needed.
If you really want to clean the registry - use for example CCleaner but check EVERY entry INDIVIDUALLY. -
I do defrag and clean the registry once in a while. I hope that this partitoning works a little... Sat here i come!
-
From the programs on that image that you can remove entirely would be:
IDT PC Audio
Local Agent (though check what it does)
MUI StartMenu Application
SmartMenu
Windows Desktop Gadgets (unless you use it ... this can increase boot time)
HP Quick Launch Buttons
HP QuickTouch On-screen Display
You might also want to check if you have any extra HP software installed.
If you do, uninstall it (all except the necessary drivers)
You could also check in BIOS if there are any network devices running during startup as well (those can definitely increase boot times). -
Just don't expect too much. In my experience all these attempts end up in just little improvement, something bogs the system to start up for more than a minute. After numerous attempts I always end up in formatting C: and installing Windows. And voila - 25s boot up...
But I must say this should be the last thing to do.

Generally speaking, yes, it would be recommended to just go via the clean install route since it would likely save you time.
However, most of the problems I encountered were due to the pre-installed bloatware.
Even if you disable all start-up programs except the a/v (which is what I did) some bloatware may have created separate services that integrated themselves into Windows (and they wouldn't show up with the start-up programs).
Hence why I mentioned removal of ALL HP software (unless of course it's drivers for a needed device).
Other than that ... if the problem still persists ... then do a clean install (though if you remove them, then it's more or less guaranteed to remove the services that slow the system down).
But checking the BIOS for any extra devices starting up would be prudent as well. -
ok i give up.. partioning software shows that i can't resize and move data on drive... looks like i'll have to deal with the services and programs.
