My Win XP Pro system has been slow lately. CPU usage is not reaching 100% nor is my PF usage very high (450mb). Why is my system so slow? Spyware? Virus? I wouldn't think so. The system is pretty clean. Plus I have PC-Cillin Internet Security that includes Antivirus protection and Spybot installed.

You should check for processes running, etc. Look in the Dummy Guides section, we have a ton of great resources on how to get more out of your machine.

Yes, your problem could be spyware related. You should dl ad-aware and spyware blaster to go with spybot. Also, I would recommend you get ccleaner and use the registry cleaner.. it works like a charm

    start/run/"msconfig"/startup
    uncheck everything not needed, reboot.
Also look in your tray, Lower left by clock. If you see alot of icons, these are progranms running. These slow computer down. Only thing in mine is wireless signal and battery life.

Download and run Crapcleaner (ccleaner). It is a very good program and is free. I notice a speed improvement after I run it.

I ran CrapCleaner and my system is faster now. However, I don't understand how ccleaner can have such a significant effect on my system.

Malware/adware can slow a system down to a crawl. Perhaps you should be a bit more careful about the sites you frequent. ;)

On questionable sites, you should always disable cookies and javascript/java.

Everytime you install/uninstall a program (actually pretty much everything you do on windows can have an affect, but install/uninstall always do something to the registry) windows tend to accumulate too much info in its registry, and registry cleaner cleans, unused or error/corrupted registry so your computer can run more smoothly.

I used to use crapcleaner but now i use Registry Mechanic its much better.
