Well recently I solved my slow file access problem by getting rid of "spyware terminator", but since vista is against humanity there is one more problem I can not get rid of. My slow login time. It takes up to 15-20 seconds to get from the login prompt to the desktop (Then an additional 30seconds to have all startup programs to load). I know someone with .5Ghz lower in clock speed and 2gb less in memory. Even if I disable all startup programs and services the slow startup time remains. Any Ideas? I have run AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, and Defraged the HardDrive.

Alot of the Antivirus programs have extra programs. Which could slow down your bootup. I had some slow down when I use Systemsuite Antivirus. I change to Nod32 Antivirus and It uses very little Ram and boot up time faster.

I tested that theory already by disabling all services and startup programs. Very little difference in log-in speed.

Do you have a norton? I know that program slows than laptops a lot. Also, could it be a spyware problem? Have you tried system restore?

login prompt = login screen :)
No I don't have Norton. I use Avast and Comodo for security.
Yes I took a look at the guide. I have done all the steps already. Any Ideas? It really doesn't make sense to me.

But the thing is. I ran a test. I desabled ALL none microsoft services and ALL startup programs. Leaving just vital Microsoft OS services. While the speed is increased. It is still not close to what it should be.

It takes me about 1' the whole process, 20sec is excellent, I would be happy with it.

20seconds? Thats horrible just to go from login to desktop. My friend has a core2duo 1.83 he gets to the desktop in around 2 seconds. (Then the desktop takes another 10seconds to get ready.) And yes he has Norton and a bunch of other software that is hogging is memory.

Try a program called "PC Booster" It worked wonders on XP for all my machines reducing overall bootup time significantly. The new version works with Vista I believe!

Learned something new. I didn't know that the more programs you install the slower the computer gets. I thought as long as you disable startup programs and defrag your good. I uninstalled around 20 programs last night and the speed is back to what it should be. Thanks for your ideas though guys.

1 min average is not bad for the booting process. Just log in and go make yourself a coffee, Vista will be all set, warm and ready when you will be back, and make a cup for me too :D

People are so worried about boot times, etc as if they are going to invent something in that precious time. Nothing but useless (sometimes useful) surfing...

I heard you, I normally open my laptop in the morning and go prepare coffee, when I'm back it seems to be like it just booted up.

Well, for a desktop and working at home, boot time isn't an issue.. but when you're starting class and your firing up your system to take notes on, every second counts.

Why don't you use hibernate? Resuming from hibernate is much more faster.
