Anyone have tips on how to approach slow Vista (32bit) shut-downs?

I have a new Vaio Sz650, and Vista usually takes 60 seconds to shut down. Sometimes it takes 3-4 minutes! I have removed most of Sony "bloatware", and aside from antivirus, utorrent, office, powerdvd i have not installed much else.

first and foremost i think you should check for viruses and spywares.

then do a disk scan, disk defragment and registry clean.

    Defrag maybe?

How many processes/programs are you running when you are about to shut down?

My Vaio takes 15 seconds max to shut down. Fastest I've saw it shut down was around 8 seconds...

Some programs don't properly respond to a "shutdown now, please" request from Windows, and it eventually ends up timing out, which is why it takes a while for Windows to shut down. Try shutting down the programs in your tray manually, and then shutting down Windows, seeing which one causes the shutdown to "hang"

You might want to look in task manager as well to see what is running at shutdown.

Same for me. It takes no more than 10-15 seconds to shut down. Try installing whatever Windows Updates appear, and also download and install the two Vista hotfixes. Tweak some msconfig and services.msc settings, and defragment your disk since there is probably quite a bit of fragmentation after removing all the bloatware. You should see instant improvement.

From "Performance Information and Tools", go to "Advanced tools" and see if there are any performance issues. If there are any programs that are interfering with shut down they should be there.

For me it says utorrent increases the hibernate / standby time by 6.1 seconds.

I followed this site's instructions into my Registry and my WaitToKillServiceTimeout is set at 1000. The article says the default is 20000, and that the default setting is the safest setting for your computer. 20000 means 20000 milliseconds. So my setting is set to 1 second? I have not even touched this setting before. So is this my default setting or should I change it? I dont have any issues with my shutdown times...Vista shuts down within 15 seconds for me.

If your notebook shuts down within 15 seconds, then I would just leave it alone.

There has also been a Hotfix issued for slow shutdowns and program hangs causing vista to not shut down in a timely manor. i dont know what the KB number is on it, but yeah, its def an issue that has had a patch released for it, via windows update.

i don't have any slow shutdown problem, but when i shutdown vista the screen was like flashing/blinking 2-3 times like it switch to an external monitor. This occured when the screen switch from desktop to the aurora "windows shutting down" screen.

Is this normal? cos i havent got another machine with vista yet.

    Thanks
