Hey all; I've been trying to deal with a sluggish laptop for about a year and a half now, and I can't quite take it anymore. Its hard drive has always been terrible, as it is an old RAID drive (the up to date drivers for it say they're from 2006). It's worse than my old standard hdd, which wasn't a RAID. It's an Alienware laptop though, so literally everything else in it is good, but you can imagine how much of a bottleneck it is to have a god awful hard drive to have everything run off of.
There are a lot of things on the web that tell you how to help maintain your computer, and I've tried some things already, but this new thing I've found is direct memory access (DMA). I can't seem to find any listing under device manager for IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, however. I'm looking at this page: Turn Direct Memory Access (DMA) on or off - Windows Help
I've looked elsewhere for an answer, and I even hit 'show hidden devices', Nothing!
Can anyone tell me how to enable DMA, or perhaps any other tricks you guys know of that are most important? I was told once by someone over the phone that I have a ton of registry errors I believe, so whatever you got would be helpful! Thanks in any case.
-
DMA is only available when both the drive and chipset support it. But SATA drives and controllers don't support ATA Channels.
It was more prevalent with the older IDE drives.
Your hard drive problem could just be that...a hard drive problem. The drive (or drives) could be too filled up with data, too fragmented, or the drive(s) could just be on their way out.
What would help the most is to know what Alienware you have. A specific model will go a long way to helping us formulate a recommendation. -
"Disk drive" drivers don't get updated much so the 2006 dated driver you are seeing is probably MS's disk.sys which will always have a 2006 date (which is fake) but is current to the version of the OS.

TBH, the day of ruling HDD Raid0's is long gone. It may be time to invest in a good boot SSD and a 2TB data drive.

Ah gotcha, thanks. I may as well post my dxdiag I suppose
And I'll reiterate that the hard drive has been about as slow since I got it that year and a half ago, really, so I'm wondering if there is anything that can be done about it. It took them a while to figure out my 2 raid drives weren't even linked, so we did that already, and I have been using high performance mode as of yesterday which I think might be helping..
Anyway, here is my dxdiag:

DXDIAG is kinda useless as it's not for disks, it's for GPUs. You didn't report a GPU problem.
While we won't rule out DMA and IRQ, these are hopelessly legacy things that your current OS and devices are well-designed to wrap their heads around and they in 99.9% of situations are not the culprit. If needed we can swing back around to those.
Your first order of business is to check DEVICE MANAGER for the disk controller. This will be under the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" section. You should have an Intel driver, with a fairly recent (<1 year) date. Of course at this exact time Intel's driver site is down.. again.. but you'll go here:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101
...eventually, and get the driver. For yours you may have trouble with the latest version, for some reason they've cut off certain older chips from using newer RST drivers, if this is the case (it gives a generic "you can't install this on your hardware" error), get the 12.9 version (which should be on the list as an older version).
Start there. -
-
That indicates some potentially major issue. I recommend resetting your BIOS to any defaults, and try installing that driver anyway. This is likely a reason for your problem.
-
Valena is in RAID 0 mode. So the R4 will show a RAID controller under Storage Controllers in Device Manager (which does show up in the screenshot). If the RAID volume is the only storage volume in the system, the the SATA controller won't be present in IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.
Valena, I would HIGHLY recommend you invest in an mSATA SSD and install windows unto it. It will be tricky for you because you will need to remove your RAID hard drives, back up all the data on them, then reformat them once your new SSD has Windows installed on it. That way Windows will not try to boot up to your old RAID 0 drive again. -
He keeps mentioning only one drive. I'm not sure how that's a RAID. If the situation is different, than I am misunderstanding what he has due to plurality confusion.
If he has two drives, it should probably be verified and explained, then we can troubleshoot correctly. GIGO. -
Very good point.
Valena, download HWinfo and take a screenshot of your SYSTEM SUMMARY. That will give us a clear picture of your drive status. -
-
@SubZero, they're linked - so I think that's what did it...two seperate drive, linked to act as one. I was told it would make them faster, but I don't think I really ever saw an improvement.
@radji - that would be like a $200 investment to do myself, right? And don't I need to be pretty pro to mess with the insides of an Alienware laptop? I've messed with the idea of asking Alienware for some, but for them it'd be about $300, and then maybe another $200 to get myself under warranty, at which point I figure if I had that money I would use it on a new system anyway. But maybe if you say it can be done safely enough on my own...maybe, heh. -
And yes, you do NOT need to be a pro to install the mSATA SSD into your Alienware.
mSATA cards are very small ( SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-MTE250BW mSATA 250GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com) and are basically plug-and-play. The only catch is you will have to do some data transferring to make the mSATA your primary OS drive, and then use your RAID 0 as your storage drive. This is how I have my R2 configured.RCB likes this. -
If the stripe size is too small this will tend to limit performance. Also be sure the heads are aligned properly. if not then each read/write can be extended in the stripe, ie if the sectors are 4k each but the drive reads the last 2k of one sector then the first 2k of the next for a 4k chunk It can slow down the read and fragment within the 4k data chunk from the hdd.
-
This is *absolutely* something I'm going to look into. The idea of even being able to do this on the cheap without me needing to re-do my warranty...this could be bliss. Too bad I will never be able to re-start my warranty with Alienware after I do it though. Oh well
Thanks a ton you guys. I'll let you know if I have any other questions. -
I never had the partition alignment issue but I was always careful from the get go. I did run two 500GB Momentus XT drives in a raid on a PM45 chipset. Since the sector size was 4K I tried a stripe at 8k so that there would be no further empty sectors than needed. This did two things.
1.) It limited the top speed bandwidth to 133mbs where with a large stripe 200mbs+ was easily attainable.
2.) at its full bandwidth in the background the driver was pulling 33% CPU load.
The reason is because the chipset is a hardware hybrid where it uses CPU cycles. A true hardware solution would do everything on the other side of the bus including combining the stripe data.
Slow computer/hard drive - can anyone lend a quick hand?
