My sony vaio FZ with intel 4965 wifi link takes more than 2 minutes to connect to a wireless network during start up. I am using a netgear router. Is there any solution to fix this problem?

The easiest thing to do is try powering down and up your router. If that doesn't help search to see if you need a driver update for Intel, and a firmware update for your router.

I installed the most recent driver a week ago. I think it is the problem with netgear router.

Try changing to another channel if everything is otherwise working properly.

Also, if you have connected to many wireless networks over time, Windows remembers them and inserts them into the list of preferred networks. Each new connection goes to the front of the list. So, if you regularly use 10 or 12 access points, but the one at home was the first to be used, Windows may be checking each other network first causing the delay

So, go to your network connectios, right click your wireless connection, go to the wirelss tab and delete older, non used networks.

Good tip. Thanks. I had quite a few from traveling this summer and deleted all but my home router. I'm not sure if it was causing connection delays but they certainly aren't needed any more. In my Intel Wifi GUI it's under "profiles"

ah, yes, I was speaking to Windows Wireless Zero Configuration....

In my case, it does not cause a huge lag, but it does cause some---in particular, I have several apps that access network resources and are begin at startup....I can always tell when I've been visiting too many wireless hotspots because several of these apps will alert me that they were not able to access the network in time (they time out while the computer is busy scrolling through the networks)

I tried Windows several times when I was on the road at free hotspots when Intel was acting and it worked fine. At home my router is WPA password protected and works fine with Intel. If I try, Windows asks for a password, which I have no idea of. I've tried copy and paste from the Linksys administrator page but that doesn't seem to work, although it says I'm connected and have a signal, I can't access the 'net.

I don't have anyone else in the neighborhood with Wifi so I could probably drop the password protection.

I installed the intel pro wireless software. All it has is only diagnostics. I can't find any other utility program in that. Has anyone used this?

    I experience the same issue.

In my case, I believe it's my anti-virus program that is running a scan to make sure everything is in working order. It may delay your connection to the Internet until it is sure everything is ready.
