Hello!
My laptop (Toshiba a 200 with Vista B) gets now slower start up after installing sp1 and upgrading the BIOS, everything is ok but from showing welcome screen to desktop ,it takes about 40 sec.The whole process from pressing the power key to the desktop is up,it takes 1,20 sec. Before the updating it was about 45 sec.
Could someone help or explain why it s taking that time now , it´s probably normal with 1.20 sec I guess.![]()

Well you just installed a major update, so it's usual to get some slow boot-ups for awhile. Also, you should defrag and clean out your registry to help speed things up. Defrag will be especially helpful. I suggest you pick up jkdefrag and run it in safe mode for a thorough job: http://www.kessels.com/Jkdefrag/

Try defragging your boot files. See my signature for a link to a thread on the topic. Read the instructions carfully before you begin! Once you start the process DO NOT CLOSE THE COMMAND PROMPT WINDOW and DO NOT INTERRUPT THE PROCESSES.

Before you installed SP1, Superfetch and Prefetch (the two things that help speed up the system boot and program startup) are well trained. Superfetch and Prefetch rely on monitoring your usage patterns and create a usage history of what programs you use and when you use them. When you install SP1, the usage history is deleted and has to be recreated. This was done to maintain stability and to make sure Superfetch and Prefetch don't try and load old/non-existent program/system files.
Hope this helps. The system will speed up again in about a week. Make sure you defragment the hard drive and do a check disk.

I'd say a regular defrag won't help as much as a boot file defrag, but yeah you're right. I completely forgot about boot-file defrag...uh, whoops. TuneXP has a boot file defrag for XP right or do you know a better way?
Edit: Then again I think jkdefrag might not allow TuneXP's boot file defrag to stick. Doesn't TuneXP use XP's built in defrag to optimize the boot files and it just turns it on? If that's the case, jkdefrag will undo those changes. One of the weaknesses of jkdefrag. -
Let vista get used to it. it will get faster after a bit.
-
Thanks all for replying!
How to do a check disk. I have done a diskdefrag. -
I didn't get a chance to defrag the bootfiles however and see if that helped. -
-
i've noticed that too- when i installed sp1 i felt the computer was slower. i then tried the passmark performance test with sp1 and noticed my computer's score had dropped from 365 to 355. So u are right in thinking sp1 IS a waste of time and will decrease your performance.

(Well that's not EXACTLY right. If you read my message on how to force a boot file defrag, you'll see that Vista will attempt to do a boot file defrag if you leave the machine idle for a long enough time. But the usage patterns for most laptop users preculdes that. Hence, my batchfile to force the boot file defrag.)

if only there was bootvis for vista......
-
I usually leave my laptop idle for awile. But that's besides the point. I remember when I first installed sp1. My startup was slow for awile then it got lower and lower each boot up. I don't recall doing anything out of the ordinary to cut it back down. But that was a long time ago, so heh. My memory could fail me.

Yeah I know TuneXP is for XP only. I was actually wondering about boot-time defrag for me on my XP laptop.

All Tunexp does is the same thing my batch file does. (I am CERTAIN of that as I did a major forensic investigation of it when I wrote my "article" on Vista boot file defrag.) It makes some other claims, but they are a load of ...
But, if you want to see what is really happening with the bootfiles and defrag them too, BootVis is the bomb! It is such a cool app, but only works under XP, sadly. It used to be available directly from Microsoft, but they pulled it because a few idiots got into some trouble while using it. But it still exists out there if you look for it.
Highly recommended. It is very educational too.

How much does bootvis cutdown the start up time to?
-
For some reason bootvis has never worked for me. I always get the error: Number of physical drives in the trace file is 0. Trace file has invalid system configuration information.
I haven't found anything to fix the issue.
Also I saw a MS on bootvis that said this:
Please note that Bootvis.exe is not a tool that will improve boot/resume performance for end users. Contrary to some published reports, Bootvis.exe cannot reduce or alter a system's boot or resume performance. The boot optimization routines invoked by Bootvis.exe are built into Windows XP. These routines run automatically at pre-determined times as part of the normal operation of the operating system.

Gary, take a look at this.

Could you provide some insight to this app? How it works. -

Yea, I've heard about it. Was thinking of using it on my XP desktop. But I hardly turn it off anyways, so I didn't bother. just curious

If you look further down the page there is a link on how to decrease the boot time. That link leads to a page that is a joke at best. All it does is change the menu of Operating Systems that pops up if you have a dual boot situation (or a multi boot one). Not applicable to 90% of the folks out there.
Gary -
i kno it doesnt. its a way to see boot time. o.o
i just wanted to kno how it works.
ya i saw that. pointless. -
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
Note that this is actually measuring the SHUTDOWN time and the BOOT TIME, because it writes the "start time" value BEFORE it reboots the machine. This is not bad, but it is not going to give a measure of JUST the boot time.
Gary -
About slow SP1 times, I think it needs to settle it, as Vista has that superfetch thing from what I read... -
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
Now having said that, for a machine that has been allowed to set idle long enough that the AUTOMATIC boot file defrag built into XP was run, you are likely to see no difference in speed.
However, like I said it is also VERY educational in that it gives you a visual understanding of the timing of the entire boot process and what components take what amount of time.
BTW Superfetch has ZERO effect on boot time. It does have a big impact on application loading though.

It`s what can be deducted from his post
Anyway, I got the point.
I`ll try bootvis for my XP partition . -

That's true. I'll try it out. Idk, alot of people care about boot times.
Slower start up after SP1 !!
