In general I'm really enjoying using vista, the only problem is that whenever I use flip 3d instead of being nice and smooth, the animations are very slow and jerky. I have to cycle through all the open windows once before its nice and smooth. I've got a dell XPS M1330, 2gHz C2D, 8400gs with the most recent dell driver etc so it should breeze through aero. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

    Welcome to NBR! :D
Are you sure you're laptop isn't on "Power Ssaver" mode in Vista power management settings, rather than "High Performance" ? :)

The Flip 3D works great on my m1330, and I believe I have a very similar configuration to yours.

I've had about 8 or 9 screens open, and the flip feature worked great.

Might be some setting or other, sorry I can't help more....

I'm thinking that the OP's M1330 has the older Geforce 8400M with DDR2. I know similar configurations with the 8400M GS that are not really that smooth with Flip 3d. Interestingly the GMA 950 and X3100 all have been smoother in my experience.

But anyways part of the reason the OP's laptop acts that way is PowerMizer. It runs in low power mode, so when you first activate flip 3d it will be choppy. Then as you continuaully do it repeatedly the GPU will ramp up speeds to low power 3d or full 3d mode then making it run smooth. A solution would be to increase low power 2d clocks or run it in faster power modes, but that would be detrimental to heat and battery life.
