I bought a Compaq 762NR Laptop on sale at Staples.

    Its running Windows Vista

when I place the mouse pointer over a link or button, it automatically clicks it frequently.

How the heck do I stop This!!!

Are you sure you're not gently tapping it when you drag it over? I had the same problem. Methinks your touchpad sensitivity is too high. Try finding your touchpad options (through control panel or touchpad application; I'm not familiar with the software on compaq laptops) and turning the sensitivity on it down. Also see if it as any "anti-accidental click" features.

    Thanks Danja,

It was a setting with the synaptics pointing device software.

there is a feature called tapping where if you tap the touchpad fast it will act just like clicking the button.

I went through the control panel and disabled it..

I have always had mine disabled for the last 9 years because of same problem. I am athletic enough to move my finger 1 or 2 inches and click the button.
