First off this is for my friend. She purchased windows vista business for her new computer, thinking it had everything premium had because it was more expensive. She now hates that she doesnt have the media center and wants to get home premium. She has already installed it and everything, so is there a way for her to get vista premium without purchasing a new os altogether?

I don't think so. However, you (or your friend) may take comfort in your signature. :D

I'm no expert on Windows Vista, but I'm almost 95% certain that you do have one upgrade path available to you right now, and that is from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate, which does include media center I believe.

Unfortunately, the only way to do this is to purchase the OS, though, you may be able to call Microsoft and they might sell it to you at a reduced cost.

And is the Vista install 32-bit or 64-bit?

It is not possible to downgrade to Home Premium from Business. The only way is to use Anytime Upgrade to Ultimate. Has your friend activated Windows? This may help for making a return to the retailer.

to go from vista business to vista ultimate is going to cost you approx 120 dollars. At this point, you have a few options. You can resell your copy on ebay assuming its not activated and purchase a license for home premium, or you could just cough up the 120 bucks.

If it's a retail copy of Vista Business, try trading it for Premium. You can probably get at least an even trade for it, since Business is more expensive.

Even if it's activated, you are allowed to transfer a retail license to another owner... once, I think.

The other choices are to upgrade to Ultimate, buy a copy of Premium outright, or find other software that has the features you're interested in.
