I was one of the most people who hated Windows 8, but this changed recently as I got my shiny new ASUS G750JX. If I want to install Windows 7, I will have to disable secure boot, fast boot, options in the BIOS, and enable "Launch CSM" which offcourse is way slower when booting. Performance wise in Windows I don't know but it seems that Windows 8 is snappier.
So I was forced to try to adapt to Windows 8
What I did was install StartIsBack (the best start menu alternative I've tried from the lot, classic shell is crap and Start8 from Stardock sometimes makes my explorer.exe freeze when I right click on a file)
Next, I configured all my library folders to my liking
I disabled hibernation and pagefile
I uninstalled all metro apps by going to the Win 8 Start screen, right clicking on each one, then clicking on uninstall at the bottom
then I ran this registry file to completely get rid of the Metro Apps
I disabled the Home Group 2 services as I don't need any home group managing my file sharing
I disabled the program compatibility assistant, I know what I'm doing I don't need Windows to pop up after every app install asking me whether it installed correctly or not
I disabled error reporting
I disabled the notification after running any file from Windows that asks you "You have new apps that can open this extension". I did this via the Group Policy Editor or you can run this reg file if you have Windows 8 Single Language then reboot
I set my icon spacing to -1600 to have long names properly display (did this via the registry)
I installed all the Windows 7 Games like Solitaire, Hearts, etc. (PM me for more details on how to do this)
I didn't sign in to a Microsoft Account, local account FTW
Disabled UAC
I am trying to find a reason to force me to go back to Windows 7 but I can't
What are the quirks that you are having that makes you not want to install Windows 8?
-
1.) No gadgets, Want native not hacked support!
2.) Broken DWM and Aero Glass, those flat borders keep drawing my eyes away from the apps.
3.) All the rest you've done without hacks so I don't have to worry about either inputting them nor M$ doing something to lock me out of them.
I am sure others need more like the original search and the like.................. -
Try it -
I honestly don't use it but others I personally know do. I have to be able to give them a reason to use Win8 as well. This just as I do not use the start button but other I know do, in fact the majority do. Personally I use Rocket Doc and on a rare occasion the start button.
Desktop users are upset as an OS/UI should be an enhancement from the prior generation. While the OS definitely is for both tablets and desktops the UI is only for touch devices and several steps backwards for desktops. If they, M$, would have listened to the beta testers from the get go there would only have been some small issues. I can see where Ballmer wants to make his mark in history as Gates did, I just hope he is prepared for exactly what that mark will be!
Also until they fix DWM and gadgets I won't be trying anything Win8, search or otherwise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
-
Oh I don't know, let's see, perhaps the fact that you had to do everything you listed just to make it acceptable for you!
-
Well, just a quick listing, since I really should be asleep at this late hour of the night...
1) UI. 'Nuff said.
2) Mice/TrackPoint and/or non-touchscreens don't play too well with Metro (or rather, Metro doesn't play well with those).
3) (My biggest complaint):
Why bother? So far, Windows 7 has met every one of my needs from a Microsoft OS, and I simply can't find reason to replace 7 with 8 as my main OS. Price isn't even an issue here since I loose nothing in getting 8 (free through my university via an agreement with MS). Aside from having to deal with a few MBA's decisions of "Oh, lets change up the UI because tablets!!1!", none of the "under the hood" changes are convincing enough for me to switch. My hardware is already fast enough so that I rarely see any loading time for anything besides huge programs like GIMP, Visual Studio Professional, and a few games, so even if Windows 8 is truly faster than Windows 7 on the same hardware (which i don't buy, or is very trivial), so that can't be a reason. Personally, i have no problem with Aero being gone, but "OMG (non-)shiny new interface!!!" isn't worth the time spent to retrain myself for 8. Not even the neat-o transfer window or task manager in 8 is convincing enough, since if i ever actually wanted that stuff i can easily find that new functionality in 3rd party tools. So what are we left with, honestly? I can't seem to figure out what's worthwhile... -
Personally, I have made my peace with the new UI, so if I get a new rig with 8, I'll use 8, but I won't go out of my way to upgrade my Win 7 rigs to 8, my N50 is still running 7, so is my desktop. My M6700 has both since I had the upgrade for 15$ and it was my first foray into Windows 8 territory. I use either OS depending on how I feel like and whether I need to use EndNote (it's only installed on my Windows 7 install). -
All it does is filenames, no content whatsoever. Of course, it's all a matter of what you need. But, if you give Windows Search a chance to index what you need, it works just as fast as Everything, but it will index file contents (as configured). It's never let me down, and I use it extensively, with roughly 200,000 items in the index for my workstation laptop. In fact, Search is one of the most crucial features of a computer OS, for the kind of work I do every day. Too bad Microsoft started crippling the interface after Vista... Yep, that's right, as far as the Search interface is concerned, Vista was the best Microsoft ever offered. Then (partially forced by a lawsuit from our friends at Google), Microsoft started crippling the interface in Windows 7, and don't even get me started on Windows 8...
So what are the quirks you experience in Windows 8?
