Hmmm I would start by going to your hardware manufacturer's websites and looking them up for Vista 64 drivers. Also check the NBR Toshiba forum, see if there's any news there. Finally, you could always call up Toshiba's customer tech support, they'll let you know the where or when.

Gatordude, does that mean that I can call Toshiba support and ask them whether drivers for my video card (ATI Radeon 9100 IGP) will be available for Vista?

Strangely enough, yes. By all means try ATI's site and see if they have the Vista drivers for your GPU there---make sure they specifically say it's compatible with your Toshiba---but laptop makers tend to customize the video drivers for cards in their laptops. Asus for example releases their own Vista drivers for the X1600 in my laptop. So call them up if you can't seem to find the drivers, and the tech support guy will probably know where you can get it.

I can answer that now, however. No, there won't be, at least not official ones - Vista requires a 100% DirectX 9-compatible video card, and the 9100 IGP only supports hardware-accelerated DX 8.1; it lacks the Shader Model 2 extensions required for Vista's interface.

Ah...there's your answer then bc135. Personally, I find it odd that MS won't consider providing some kind of support for older IGP's that don't have DX9, maybe in time they will be released from a third party.

Wouldn't be easy to do. A big part of the advantage to Vista is that it offloads most GUI rendering to the GPU. That's hard to do if you don't have a GPU that has a minimum of shader capabilities.

Of course, Microsoft *could* reintroduce the 30 year old GUI code they used on XP, to allow the CPU to take over. But that'd be slow (because Vista promises more powerful GUI capabilities), and it'd be pretty much pointless.

There are some pretty powerful systems out there with relatively outdated IGP's, most notably business oriented PC's, so if the grumbling gets loud enough I can see MS providing some sort of hybrid GDI solution for Vista in a service pack.

Proof that Vista is a POJ..? All you have to do is use it for a while... It doesn't do anything you can't do with XP and some shareware. Plus the DRM is a joke... Why people defend it is beyond me. Must be some Freudian thing. Wait for SP2, it won't be long...

Sometimes children misbehave... they just need to get it out of their system. Please don't shut it down... it's way too entertaining. Just turn on the dirty word filter or something.
