I should be getting my new laptop (Fujitsu N6010) on Monday.

I was wondering what everyone's reccomendation is for adding software or downloads-JUST THE BASICS PLEASE. I DON'T want to overload it with something "just to have it."

    Here are my plans...

    Mozilla Firefox 1.0.....of course....

Virus Scan-I *think* it comes with Norton but I was thinking about the free Grisoft AVG thing (?) also. Opinions?

Adobe-I need that for viewing .pdf files, whilch I hate on my old desktop (Slloooowwwww!) I'll get an updated version.

Real Player and Windows Media Player (eiter or?)

I have a free Adobe Photoshop 2.0 for when I start digital photography, so that will go on there...

    Any other suggestions?

Never thought I'd be into THIS stuff!

    Adobe is usually preloaded.

    You need a spyware program.

You need a firewall program if one is not built into your broadband router or if you plan to "use a public or neighbor's network".

Winzip or other archiving program is essential.

Real Player sucks. It is the source of a lot of spam. I would avoid them like the plague or tax collector.

Virtual Disk is a useful program to save copies of CD ROMs on your hard drive so you don't lug extra junk around or scratch it while travelling (or worse, losing the disk).

You obviously need Windows Office or equivalent (Word Perfect Office) to do basic work.

You will probably have CD or DVD burning software preloaded. You should already have some DVD player software like Power DVD, or whatever...

Good luck on the new toy.

Make sure you get adobe reader 7, its cleaner, and if you let the speed loader load on start up, it loads almost instantly when opening a pdf. Depending on what you use for email, mozillas thunderbird is pretty good as well. alcohol 120% is a good virtual disc drive/image maker. I agree on real player being bad, also the fact that it is barely used anymore. Once you get all the video codecs you need, windows media player should be sufficient (if not the BSplayer is one that i like, it should play just about anything,or maybe windows media player classic, your prefference). as for zip programs, winrar would imo be the good one to get, you can just get the trial version and use it infinitely even though it trys to say otherwise(trial period up for example).

only thing with the divx player is that it at least used to come bundled with spyware (gain/gator), and it will only play divx/xvid type files, there are a lot of other popular file formats out there that it won't play.
IMO wmp has better library controls and features then winamp, i pretty mucn just use winamp for mp3 --> wave conversions
