Ok sounds kinda odd, but im looking to rip just the AUDIO part of a Video DVD. I have a John Legend DVD , where he plays Live at the house of blues . The DVD Video is great, and the audio is great as well, I just want to rip the audio to different MP3’s so I can put them on my MP3 player and listen to it on the go. Software that’s free and works GREAT is best, but if there is a program you can recommend that does it, maybe I can download a trial version from the maker of the software. TIA.

Don't hold me to this, but i think you could use dvd decrypter, which is available (for a limited time i assume) here. Then select IFO mode-->Stream processing tab-->allow stream processing on the tick box--> then select the required audio - I think it is '6ch English'

for more information on IFO mode if you get stuck visit here and scoll down to IFO mode guide.

It is important to note that ripping the AUDIO part of a Video DVD is easily done, however, rip the audio from a real DVD-Audio was impossible (until a year ago) because of encryption and closely guarded, and very expensive decryption keys.

Only very few software applications were able to play back real DVD-Audio discs and they did not allow to store the music on your HDD. It seemed impossible to retrieve the decryption key from the application. Some bright minds however intruduced a workaround, that would patch one of the the software's dll and thus allowing the decrypted audio stream to be saved to the disc.

You can simply just load the .VOB files into VirtualDubMod, set the start/end times and just save the wav. You can then use any audio converter to convert it to whatever format you want.

    cheers!

as I pointed out earlier: a VOB file is only found on a VIDEO DVD. Of course it contains AUDIO track, but that is just a lossy format.
On the contrary, DVD AUDIO discs contain heavily encrypted lossless audio.

I used DVD Audio Ripper and I love it. I used it to get the audio tracks from DVD concerts and load them onto my iPod

Well since we're being pedantic about things, allow me to make an observation. The audio on video DVDs is mostly encoded as a lossy format (either AC3 or DTS), with the exception of many concert DVDs which use PCM audio. PCM of course, is uncompressed and ideal for transcoding to MP3. Even if you only have an AC3 soundtrack available, it's still OK for making into MP3s... yes, transcoding a lossy format is less than ideal, but it's better than not having it at all.

Can't give you any specific suggestions regarding applications, I haven't run Windows in years and normally do things by hand under linux or OS X. I have used DVD Audio Ripper in the past and it's an excellent application, not free though. For a free solution, perhaps this may be suitable.
