You can check disk usage in the performance monitor within vista, but to check and record if any of your SMART values change HDD Health may work. I have not used it in a while nor have I tested it on vista. If my memory serves me correctly, it runs in the background polling at any interval recording a change in value to effectively give you a time of death. Link: http://www.panterasoft.com/

Edit: I also think Hiren's BootCD has a couple utilites to do this.

okay i ran a primary HDD test via BIOS

    and many more.

    its damaged for sure..

i was jus hoping it wasnt..but it is ....and all my lag waves are happening due to the I/O errors on it.

i ordered a Vista Installation CD from HP for $20 USD ...

and they said i can buy my own HDD and do it myself or give them to do it..i said i ll do it myself..they said no problem.

so i guess i am upgrading my HDD.

will head off to hardware section for good recommendations..as i really want a good HDD.

    thanks both of u

Just to round off the story here - you should also be able to download a diagnostic utility from your hdd's manufacturer (for free) and use that to determine the health status of your hdd.

And as a final suggestion, Spinrite from Gibson research.
    Excellent for recovery and repair.

Or, if you want the diagnostics and more, The Ultimate Boot CD has utilities for most drives and a whole slew of other testing and fixing stuff.

If you use that Vista Installation DVD, you will be back to the "out of the box" state of your machine. Why not burn an image of your partitions to DVD using Ghost or Acronis or something similar? Just make sure you have a BOOTABLE version of the app on a CD or DVD. Then after you install the new drive, you boot from the bootable media run the app, and then restore from the DVD image(s).

That gets your machine back to it's current state.
