Is there software that will allow you to create an image of a bootable USB flash drive and reinstall it on another drive? I have a few USB flash drives with different bootable configurations and I'd much rather use only a couple flash drives instead of having to have one for every application or have to recreate one every time I need it.

    Thanks.

I use Drive Snapshot. I have images of my USB Pendrive for Bios updates. This is fine for drives the same size or bigger when restoring.

Thanks, so it works with a bootable drive then?

It works with those perfectly. Since it does an exact image of the drive at a low level, if the drive was bootable before the clone, it will remain exactly the same after it is written.

I forgot to mention that Drive Snapshot has a 30 day fully functional Demo so you can test it out. That is the same program I use for my full system clones but I also used it for cloning bootable USB pen drives, SD's and Micro Disks.

So with that program, you could image all of your different bootable flash drives and store them some where. Then you could write what ever image you needed onto your USB pen drive as many times as you needed (as long as the target was not smaller than the source).

A lot of Disk Imaging and Cloning programs also work their magic on Flash Drives as well as HDD. For example Acronis TI will also clone Flash Drives if you happen to have the software already installed.

Edit: I used Acronis TI 2009 to clone a 4GB flash drive with bootable Windows 7 on it last night. It is probably not the best software to use for this purpose but it worked. The strange thing is that when the clone was near finished (the software indicated it was writting the MBR) Acronis requested that I reboot my PC or the operation would be terminated. Strange.

I've tried Acronis True Image and it didn't work. I have an older version (2008) so maybe that's why.

UltraISO is another easy to use choice.

Thanks. I'm good with paying for a decent program, but are there any freeware options?

I was curious and just tested a freeware called USB Image Tool but the result was not bootable and it looks like it does not account for different restore sizes.

For example if you restore a 256 MB > 4GB, the result will be a Drive with a size of 256 MB instead of 4GB. Since Drive Snapshot is all about creating images of bootable Drives, it does this at a lower level retaining the boot information.

Maybe still worth a try and there might be other programs around as well.

Yeah I found that program too. Didn't work. Couldn't find a freeware. I'll shell over the ~$40 if nothing else comes up. It would be vastly useful.
