I was wondering if anybody knows some open source/freebie software to recover data off a drive where the file system / partition got messed up.
I know Recuva can get back deleted files, but it cant scan a drive it does not recognize a file system for (where windows prompts you to format the disk before you can use it)
EaseUS can scan and recover files in this condition, but its fairly expensive so it would not be something I would want to pay for when there is most likely a good alternative out there I do not know about.
Any input is appreciated.

Hey Vicious, SUP!
I think you may find what you are looking for (and much more), amongst the many Linux pen testing distros...... many of which have forensic tools.

if you know what the file system used to be, photorec is a good option ( chances it was NTFS anyways )
PhotoRec - CGSecurity
it does get more than just photos, full list of files it trys to recover are: File Formats Recovered By PhotoRec - CGSecurity
it however does not bother trying to recover a file name from a damaged drive so you may need to do a lot of hunting afterwards or have a really good preview app. -

Oooooo, sorry, I was just trying to point you in a direction I thought could be helpful. Most of my distros are out-dated, as I, so I'm afraid I can't be of more assistance. Just go to the various distro's main page, and peruse their tool list..... and most give the tool's description. I know some of the distros will have the tools you need. Try knoppix-STD, or heck, perhaps even the latest UBCD (on pen drive) has the tools you need.

Anyhow, good luck, and let me know if you find the right distro for the job.
