    Hi People,

For the last couple of days I had this incredibly irritating issue with MS Excel.

Problem was when opening blank document in excel, it crashes. I could open an excel file already made. But not a blank document. Not even from within the file that was opened, like File > 'New Document'.

Note that all other office programs were working fine like Word, PPT etc.

So I was looking around for a solution and I found one while browsing through the web, in another forum called "Wugnet". Anyway here it is. Hope others who have similar issues find this probably resolving it :)

    >>>>>>>>
For users knowing how to navigate in registry:

Click "start" - the button down left to your screen
    Select "run" and type "regedit".
Click OK. The Registry Editor opens in a window.
In the registry editor locate the following:

H_KEY, LOCALMACHINE, SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, OFFICE, EXCEL, ADDINS, BtOFFICEAddin.BtOFFICEIntegration.1

Under label "Name" there should be a line: "Lodbehavior". Now in the same line under "Type" there should be REG_DWORD" and under "Data" there should be "0x0000003 (3)" or something similar as far as the last digit is concerned (in this case 3). Behold, you are close to the solution... Change the last digit AND the one in brackets (in my case 3) to 0. In my case under "Data" now reads "0x0000000 (0)". That's it.
Close the registry editor and restart the computer.
Your Excel now is working perfectly!

Hope this helps those in need. Good luck people :)

What else did you try that did not work? This is a pretty advanced method, and may not be necessary.

Did you try renaming or deleting the Normal.dot file? How about a Detect and Repair of Office?

    Thats a good question.

I had to resort to this because everything else failed.

First, of course, since I have the legit office xp cd, I tried Detect / Repair - it did not work.

Uninstall office / reinstall fully again - did not work.

*though i did not try to remove excel alone and reinstall it again*

There were reports of some .xla files in the office excel system folders, tried removing them, because it worked for some people, but it did not work for me.

Then I tried uninstalling ALL the addins, like analysis tookpak, solver, etc etc.. It did not work. In fact here, when I was trying to remove the addins the excel kept crashing. Then I kept trying again and again, finally with the office CD in the drive, I could remove all the add ins. BUT, the MAIN PROBLEM, remained.

Which was I could not open a blank / empty excel document. A new, empty document. I still could open an existing document.

By the way, what is this normal.dot file? where is it? I have a Normal.dot file but that is for word, a template for word.

So anyway, after trying all these, I had to get down to this advanced option.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I had 2007 installed did the repair, safe boot, renaming normal.dat,... nothing.
Installed 2003 had the exact same issue, with no solution in sight...until I found this post.

You gave back a couple hours I'd otherwise loose. Thanks again.

So I have to ask, what led you to that registry entry? And what is the 3 value SUPPOSED to do versus the 0 value?

Well what led me to the registry entry?? It was the error I had, and the suggestions I came across while looking for a solution > and this was one which actually worked for many people and I wanted to try it as well..

As for the values, they were supposed to enable / disable the feature, where the document would have a bluetooth integration, such that it would be able to send via bluetooth, from within the office application.. here I must stress, that this issue was particularly peculiar, in that, *only* excel was supposedly affected.. I had no idea why, and I did try to dig around for more, but could not get much info...

Though I figured out, to disable the Word COM Add-in, you would fix 2 (and not 0).. so I set out to find what 0 would do, but could not find any info on the value meaning... I would assume, 3 was for enabled, 2 for disable, and 0 for completely preventing the bluetooth integration with the office documents????

Edit: Though now when I dig around again, I did come across a posting for resolving this for someone with an issue involving widcomm and word 2000 (sorry couldn't get more, since the forum was in German!!)

    I have no entry:

H_KEY, LOCALMACHINE, SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, OFFICE, EXCEL, ADDINS,

    Mine is:

H_KEY, LOCALMACHINE, SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, OFFICE, 12.0, EXCEL

and even then there is no ADDINS folder there.

    Bahh... no idea

Is it probably because of some bluetooth functions? or the way bluetooth integrates with Office doc'? I don't know..

    Nice tip!

I've had a similar problem with Excel crashing every time I tried to open any kind of file - not just an empty one.

    Thanks :)
